I have an HP laptop that is about 2 years old. I have windows 7 and I installed the current general updates on my laptop from Windows (according to Windows after I do this I should be able to follow the next step..... and then be able to type in Korean) but no luck. What's really weird is that the language bar (perhaps "language bar" isn't the technical term) alows me to change to Korean BUT even when I change it, it will still only allow me to type English characters!!!
Anyone else had this experience????
Any tips???

| make sure it says "KO" as the leftmost icon, then a globe icon with a pencil that says "Microsoft IME" as the next icon and NOT "Korean" as counter-intuitive as that sounds. if your keyboard doesn't have a dedicated hangul/english key you might have to create a hot key. press your language key or just-created hotkey and type away. hopefully this will solve your issue. |

If you're just looking up short words/phrases, this work well too:
http://www.lexilogos.com/keyboard/korean.htm
You just type the Latinized version and it hangulizes (?) it automatically.
Though if anyone has a better idea for a Mac I'd be interested in hearing it as well. |

Languages & Text System preference, Input Sources. Check off HNC Romanja. You'll be able to enter Korean text phonetically (some keys are not phonetic due to differences in sound).
Honestly though, learning to type using the actual Korean key map was much easier than I expected. It took me about a week (with daily practice) to go from start to being able to type every character without looking.
Check off 2-Set Korean for the actual standard map. |

You have the language packs installed? You can switch so that on the language bar it says "KO"?
If it says "KO", then you DO have the Korean keyboard enabled. To switch to hanguel, simply hit the right "Alt" key. You should see the letter "A" next to the "KO" turn into a "가." Then you can type away.
To switch from the English Keyboard to the Korean Keyboard, hit the left "Alt+Shift". You can switch between keyboards that way. You can have multiple language packs installed, with multiple keyboard options. ALL of them will allow you to type in the Roman alphabet AND the native script. My computer here at work has KO, EN, and JP installed. 하하하伽卡阿萨萨亜sdふぁsdふぁsdふぁ. All with the alt and shift key.

Cool. This is def. more convenient though I wish Mac would use a more intuitive system like that website....typing in "ng" before first-vowel syllables takes some getting used to. |

| When Koreans buy computers in Korea, they get a Korean Windows 7 operating system. That's because the Windows with an English operating system cannot be converted to Korean and vice versa. They are not interconvertable as far as I know. If nothing works you might have to upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate, which can interconvert to Korean. |

if you're using that lexilogos site with a mac you're doing it wrong. it's also super easy on a mac to switch languages. actually much easier than on a windows pc to setup up and not have strange things happen. i have my language hot key mapped to spacebar + command and use a cheap silicone keyboard overlay with hangul on it i got on gmarket. now i can switch between english and hangul quickly and easily. |

Not what he was talking about. He only wants to input Korean. Any windows supports the language bar and multiple language input. |
