Are Korean smartphones usable outside of Korea? Do they have sim card slots in them for use in GSM countries such as the UK?
I'm just wondering whether to just buy a cheap android phone in the UK before I leave (they only cost like $65 new), have it unlocked and use it on KT, and if I then decide I want a better phone get a smartphone plan there. At least then I would have a phone I can use in other countries. |

You should be able to use them in other countries. Smartphones from KT and SK have sim cards. 3G phones in Europe and Asia use the same frequency. North America uses different frequencies for 3G so a smartphone bought in Korea would probably not be fully compatible with the US/Canadian networks (unless you buy an iphone). |

| some of the models like the galaxy s II on sk and kt are capable of global roaming without switching out the sim card. all three carriers have kiosks in incheon where you can rent a global roaming phone based on where you are going for a very small fee if you already have an account with them. it's like 2 dollars or so for a week. then they give you a little brochure with the rates. sometimes it's cheaper to go that route and sometimes it's cheaper to get a local sim, but that's always more of a hassle. |
