My school is offering me a flight home to America. This is a wonderful thing that I am grateful for. The thing is they said they will only pay for a ticket back to the states. This, as I understand, is common practice. My issue is that my family lives in Australia, but I need to ultimately end up in America.
A round-trip ticket to Australia is about the same price as a one-way to Aus and a one way to the USA. I asked my school for the ticket to Aus and then America, but they said no, so I had an idea I am sure others have had.
Would it be possible for me to purchase a ticket that goes from Korea to America, have them reimburse me and then return that ticket and buy the ticket I want? This saves me money and time since I would otherwise have to go to Aus, come back to Korea and then fly home to the US.
Has anyone ever done something like this? In terms of purchasing the ticket, they said I have to give them the details, I buy it, then they pay me back. So I would just look for a ticket that is refundable. |

You are working at a public school?
Many schools now require a scan of your boarding pass before they issue you the reimbursement for the ticket. So you will have to actually have used the ticket to get the boarding pass. (To my knowledge)
Furthermore, most refundable tickets cost far more than non-refundable tickets you buy off of most travel sites. |

| Nope, not at a public school. It is one of those one plus three programs. |

Why should they pay! In contract wise they owe you a one way ticket home. Not a stop off for a visit and a ticket home.
I mean it is nice when bosses/schools can compromise or work with me, but if they say no - I generally understand it.
Some advice - make the deal better for both parties. Price the tickets, say you want the 2 way and you will pay the difference. You need to make it worthwhile for them - not just you. You need to show them that working with you is worth their time and money.
Plus have you also considered that they maybe able to get the ticket back home for you at a cheaper rate. |

I have asked them if I can pay the difference and I really do appreciate them giving me a ticket at all. They said they can only do the ticket to America. The thing I don't understand is that it costs less for a ticket that takes me to Aus and to the US then it does for a one way to the US!
But anyway, as with most things here, I'll just have to do the roundabout thing... |

buy yourself a cheap round trip to aus with air asia,
then ask the boss to simply book you on a flight three or four weeks later than originally planned. |

just think of it this way. if they let you do it, the odds are you will go and tell all your friends about it, and they in turn will attempt it and tell their friends. before long the schools will turn into travel agencies with teacher a wanting to hit bermuda to see a dying relative and teacher b wanting to go to rio to pick up their brother before going home to happy america.
if you think about these types of policies one sided it might not make much sense to you, but it sure as chips makes a lot of sense to the schools. |

Yes yes yes, I know, I am not criticizing them as much as I was looking for a way around the system.
Airasia is definitely not the cheapest around, though. |

| Hi, just curious. What is the cheaper round trip to Aust. than Air Asia, if you don't mind? |

| in my experience so far orbitz.com and bestflights.com.au are both pretty cheap flying there. Expedia sometimes, too, but not as good as orbitz. For some reason flights there are so expensive! |

Will they reimburse you before you go? And then they won't require evidence you went?
Korean Air seems pretty flexible. Book a refundable with them, and change it maybe. |

| Why don't you just ask them to fly you one way to Australia and you fly yourself to America? |

What's wrong with that? If it costs the same what does it matter where you go? Common sense says they should check the price of a ticket to your stated hometown, give that to you in cash. What you do with it is none of their business. |

no, common sense would say if a contract says included airfare that they would get you a ticket on a real plane and make sure you go on said plane. going online, looking up a price of a ticket and giving it to a person in cash to spend on drugs and women is not the same as airfare. what is done with the money for airfare as stated in a contract is absolutely 100% their business.
if they went with your not-so-great idea then they will eventually have some joe schmoe go out for one last going away hurrah and blow all of his airfare money on booze and not even remember it. then the next day guess who has someone running crying to them? yes, that's right the school. |

Legal sense says that "airfare" means the price of the ticket, and if they meant "ticket" they would have said "airplane ticket". |
