Hi,

I'm supposed to be starting my first teaching post at the end of this month. Originally the school let me know they'd wait for my FBI check to come (I was accepted for the job in January, and I sent out my request to the FBI immediately), so I could complete the visa process at home in the states. Now they are worried I won't be in time for the new school session which starts at the end of February, so they want me to come immediately without a visa.

The directors' solution is to send have my FBI check forwarded to my address in Korea and to have me complete the visa process in Japan. I would leave at the end of next week to arrive in time. They will book me a flight with a return ticket and cancel the return portion after I arrive. I've been reading around the forums, however, and it seems like E2 "visa runs" to Japan may no longer be a viable option. Does anyone know if this is at all possible?--and if it is, am I putting myself in legal danger by doing so?

I'm sure it shows, but I am entirely new to the EFL ordeal. Any help or advice would be so greatly appreciated, you can't even imagine.

You say that you will soon start your first teaching post. I thought that the first time you get an E-2 visa you have to get it from a Korean consulate in your home country.

That's the impression I had, too. I thought you had to interview? It is the directors who have set up this plan, and I am trying to figure out if it's a sound one.

Visa runs to Japan are fine, IF AND ONLY IF you've had an E2 visa before. If you haven't had an E2 visa, you need to get it in the states and interview at the consulate.

Sure, SOME people claim to have gotten a visa sans interview, and SOME people claim that X consulate will waive the interview requirement, but it's really hit or miss. If your employer is going to pay for your ticket (pay for, NOT reimburse) and he wants to bring you over, then whatever... But If you're paying for it, I would NOT DO IT. AFAIK, the rules haven't changed on this issue recently.

It's probably not a sound plan (unless the rules have changed). It sounds like the director wants you to teach illegally for a while until he can arrange your E-2 visa. You should ask yourself whether or not you feel comfortable taking that risk.
