The school doesn't offer cash in lieu of a plane ticket at completion, but I'd rather have the cash.
Anybody have an idea how I could swap it? Find a friend who's going somewhere and change the names? |

i guess honesty isn't your strong suit. there's another thread going on about airplane tickets and trying to cheat the system right now. give it a read. |

choose what kind of ticket they buy, take it to the airport more than 24 hrs. before the flight. Get a refund. Might work... |

Bad news for you is that if it was paid for by credit card they will not give a cash refund - they just credit the card less any service fees.
More bad news is that international airline tickets are non-transferable - you can't resell it to someone else - they can't use it.

Really consider asking to the school again. Maybe if you make it a deal for them. If they have to spend a 100k less, they might take it.
But some places are sticklers about the flights. Usually public schools.
Also some hand holding on your part might be needed. Sometimes you might just have to explain to the school, what is happening and where you are going. Some school worry about teacher sticking around and causing problems.
Ask again, explain why you want the money, give them a benefit of why paying the money is better. Try to relieve any worries about visa, overstays, apartment, etc. |

If it's not in the contract, don't expect it. |

The inflexible flight payment/reimbursement is so bogged down with redtape its ridiculous.
When my last contract finished, I was allowed a flight home up to 1.2 million won. Anything over that amount and I had to pay out of my pocket.
Flying to DC isn't cheap, especially on a one-way flight. The roundtrip ticket was much cheaper. I asked my school to just purchase a roundtrip ticket and I'll pay for half. Instead of forking over 1.2 mil, the school would just have to pay 800k. I also can get a flight back to Korea for cheap.
Win-win right? No. They said it couldn't be done. Impossible was the exact word I was told. |

Nice try with the win win pkang0202. But just sometimes you really run in the intransigent people and situations. I would expect more in formal and government roles like Universities and public. Smaller places might be up for a deal. |

If you are in a public school, they SHOULD give you the 1.3mil and NOT buy you your airplane ticket. This is in your contract.
If you are in a hagwon then you're on your own because each operates differently. |

Depends on the public school umbrella you are under. Gangnam gave you a ticket or nothing. If you didn't get a flight then you don't get any reimbursement. |

Same with GEPIK but I believe in EPIK the 1.3 cash applies |
