I'm moving to the UK soon. I have a nice Samsung 42 inch plasma TV. I was thinking of shipping it over cos I think it might be cheaper than selling this one and buying another one there, although that might not be true.

I guess the key question is whether or not this TV will work in the UK. I know that analogue TV will be gone in the UK by the end of the year so analogue system compatibility is not an issue. I presume I would be able to watch Freeview or Sky through a Korean TV with a HDMI cable. Is this correct? (The TV is 60hz only)

If it's going to be a pain in the arse to use it in the UK, I'll just sell it here and buy a new one.

Also, will I be able to use a Korean Xbox with a UK TV?

Unless you are shipping a whole house full of stuff in a container (and it sits in one corner) you will not be able to ship it in a cost effective manner.

The shipping costs will be as expensive as buying a new TV.

Sell it and get a new one when you get home.

it might actually be pretty cheap to send it. i just sent about 80kg of stuff for about 150,000won, although that wasnt electrical goods so im not sure if that has any bearing on price. korean postage rates are great to be honest. maybe youd have to pay extra to insure that badboy. u also need to fill out a c-3 form from uk customs page to avoid/work out if u pay duties/tax.

the xbox would work if the tv u end up using can handle an ntsc signal. most modern tvs can accept both pal n ntsc but i'd look in your manual or find an online one to double check. also u wont be able to buy pal games which is what is sold in europe. power wise uk has same volts as korea so all u need is a plug adapter NOT a voltage converter.

There is the size issue.

Unless it is a 26" TV Korea Post won't take it (too big).

Unless it is a brand new 3D-LED the cost of shipping will be nearly as much as the TV. (new, 40" LCDs are running <500KRW in the UK).

Thanks for the input. I was looking on amazon.co.uk and it seems you can get an equivalent (or better) TV for about 600,000 won. It wouldn't be a new model but it would still be at least as good as the one I have. Also, it looks like TVs in the UK have Freeview (free to air digital TV) built in, meaning I wouldn't have to buy a separate box. I hope I can get around 500,000 won for this TV so it seems like it makes more sense to sell this one and buy a new one.

About the Xbox, I was under the impression that a HD signal was a HD signal and that Pal/NTSC were only for analogue signals, so if I used the HDMI cable it wouldn't be an issue. Is this correct?

the output from the xbox will either be pal or ntsc depending on your xbox model and it wont matter if its analogue or hdmi output it will still deliver a pal or ntsc signal. if its a korean xbox u need to make sure the uk tv can handle ntsc.

hmmm....no.

HDMI implements the EIA/CEA-861 standard and doesn't know the difference between PAL and NTSC and both are not relevant to it (the same as DVI).

mate i bought my nephew a modded korean xbox 360 and we couldnt get it working on his t.v. through hdmi because of the ntsc-pal incompatability. i dont know the technical reasons why but im telling u it wont work through hdmi unless u have an ntsc capable tv in uk. i did alot of googling at the time to find a workaround and its a common problem for people who take dvd players/consoles when moving to other countries. despite both using hdmi it was incompatible.

1. The settings for the Korean XBox 360 was not set for 720/1080 HD.
2. The TV is not HD.

NTSC/PAL has no bearing on HDTV.

Tis true, my Korean PS3 works fine through HDMI on my UK HDTV, vice versa for my UK Xbox 360 and my Korean HDTV.
