i don't think i could live in Seoul again and am looking to hear from some teachers who have experience with these small cities, i've been to both of them, but am wondering what it's like living their in detail. also, is there a lot of hiking, biking, and snowboarding to be had? how about the isolation factor of Seoul being 4 hours away? |

Hi there.
I have lived in Sokcho for 4 years. If you don't like the big city and you like a more relaxed lifestyle, then Sokcho might be for you.
With Soraksan literally in your backyard, there are countless numbers of trails for hiking. Snowboarding...well, you have to drive an hour (take a bus) to the nearest ski hill which is Alps. The other ski areas range from a 2 to 3 hour ride away depending on traffic conditions.
If you are talking about mountain bike riding, then again you have to take an hour ride to the mountain bike courses. There are, however plenty of places to go for a ride. There isn't the incredible amount of traffic and people to contend with when riding. You can get anywhere in town by bike within 20 minutes.
Of course, the beaches are also nice in summer...but crowded.
Now there are certain things that you may miss. Some western foods may be difficult to find, and there is far less of a social night life here. There are numerous hofs and such, but as far as night clubs and international cuisine, there aren't much.
These days it only takes 3 to 3 1/2 hours to get to Seoul. The benefit being that when you are going to Seoul, most seoullites are coming out and vice versa. Hence, you miss the big traffic jams and 8 hour + trips.
There are enough foreigners here that if you asked them, they could probably help you find whatever services you need, if available.
If you like partying and going out a lot, a satellite city near Seoul is probably better for you. This is usually a pretty quiet city.
Anyway, if you end up deciding to come to Sokcho, you can drop me a line.
Our school has a position in August, but I don't know about the other schools in town.
Cheers. |

Donghae is a hole.
Nature people and celebrity wannabes seem to like it, though. |
