Anyone using Linux exclusively? I played around with the earlier distributions of Linux Mint. They worked well, but still needed a bit more polish.

Its been a while and I was curious so I took another look at Linux Mint. It looks like it has come a long way.

I'm eager to try it out. Anyone else?

I've been using Debian linux exclusively for years now and it's been great. Nothing beats linux/bsd for speed, stability, and security. The only os that can touch it imo is OSX. Sometimes I miss the polish and consistency of mac apps. Linux is great because the apps are diverse and free, but I for one would welcome commercial software development and pay for quality apps.

If you just want to try linux out, I recommend installing it on a virtual machine (ie. VirtualBox) first.

Yep, I have been using Ubuntu exclusively for about 3 years now.

The current Unity desktop has taken a lot of criticism but I like it. It looks really polished IMO.

I absolutely HATE using Windows, although Windows 7 is at least not atrocious.

I haven't updated since the Julia release, but I might for Lisa. Looks good. The reviews linked on their distrowatch page are promising, too.

After you install, I'd be interested to hear how it runs for you!

After this next school paper is submitted, installing mint, ubuntu and debian on this machine is going to be my big treat. I'm pretty noobish still, so it'll be fun.

It's a thread on whether people are using Linux exclusively. There is a clear inference that most people dual-boot between Windows and Linux. My point is that, in contrast to Ubuntu, using Windows is a horrible experience. It's a perfectly legitimate comment in this context.

If you are so pedantic about titles and topics, what about "yes" or "no"?

What an awesome discussion forum we would have if people just answered 'yes' or 'no' to every question Laughing

Anyway back to the OP....

I just installed Linux Mint 12 on my old laptop just to see what all the fuss was about and I have to say that I am really enjoying it. It definitely seems snappier than Ubuntu. They've done a really good job with the Gnome 3 desktop, which was universally slated by the majority of Linux users. That said, I heard that they are ditching Gnome in the next release and have created their own DE called Cinnamon, which also looks pretty cool.

I like that lots of the stuff that is left out of Ubuntu is included in Mint. Codecs, Unrar etc are all installed during the initial installation.

I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

Or if every Mac/Linux lover had to end every post with a jab at Windows. I am not trying to derail a thread here, but why can't Linux have its' own virtues? Why does it need Windows to suck to make it good or to justify using it? A doesn't have to be wrong for B to be right; they simply serve different markets and people.

I have used a few distros/versions/incarnations/iterations of Linux and found them very interesting. Not so productive for me, simply because of the lack of time I had to invest in them, but they certainly have their charms. I do wish Linux would become a truly viable alternative, but I fear what that would entail is for it to go against itself in a sense; some standardization and eventual monetization (making up words here). Maybe it is best on the fringe; a geeky alternative for bragging rights. Wink

I think Linux Mint is doing a great job of bringing Linux to the masses. They are doing as much as they can to make the OS plug and play.

I've used Ubuntu 10.10 for almost three years. I used to dual boot with Win 7 but I now use Ubuntu exclusively. I had no reason to boot in Win 7 except to keep it and the security software up to date.

I've read many good things about Linux Mint. I've considered triple booting to try it out. I currently dual boot with Ubuntu 11.10. Not sure about Unity. If I had a touch screen I'd love it. I'll likely migrate to version 12 at some point next year.

I love the software center. Edubuntu is great in the classroom if you have a PC there and can install it. So many useful things at your fingertips.

This BS is coming from a guy who frequently takes jabs at Apple and mocks Apple users.
Yeah, don't take any shots at Windows!. His friends (who only lurk) will... Crying or Very sad

On topic:
I also use Ubuntu exclusively on my PC. It was a bit of a pain to learn at first, but now I love it. Just needs more apps... even so, no need for Windows, that's for sure.

Well it's clear you have not matured, little one. So, don't pretend you're smart now.
Still don't want to derail this thread with your nonsense, right?

It was doing alright until you came along; even poor little me managed to get back on topic.

I know you just can't help yourself though, so keep it up!
