I have accepted a job offer at a 2 year college (post High School). Apparently, the students are all at a low level of English skill (beginner to high-beginner) and I will be teaching, Conversation, Speech and Listening (3 separate classes).

Also, I have to prepare a lecture on "Learning Methods of English" to be delivered on orientation day.
This is my first university-level position, so if anyone can offer some tips regarding books, materials, lesson plans etc, I would be eternally grateful.

Hi,

one of the books that I often use is entitled: 700 Classroom Activities and is written by David Seymour and Maria Popova. I'm not sure how useful this would be for you, however it includes a variety of neatly sectioned out ideas, categorized thematically and by the type of language they are teaching.

Thanks for the constructive input. It's encouraging to see people offering useful advice that other forum users may benefit from.

If they are low level I would just buy any 5 random conversation books and group discussion books and plan around that. If they are low level it might be a good idea to start them off with a basic grammar book to build their confidence.

I like the Interchange series by Cambridge. You can check which level best applies to your students (yellow or red) and have them pickup the student copy.

Also, don't use swear words. Yes there are trolls that will respond but swearing can get you banned. Check your words.

I have actually used those books before with middle school students. They have a good range of activities, but the yellow one was too easy. However, I'm not sure of the level of my upcoming students..
Has anyone used the 'Let's Talk' or 'Talk Talk' series? They look quite good too.
As for the invectives, those kind of remarks that I objected to are utterly useless and do nothing but make the writer look like a pompous douche. I should have let it go, I guess...

I love World Link for Uni Students. Level one should do the trick if your students are beginner-ish level. Level 2 if it's a higher-level uni (in Seoul!).

Touchstone is good for uni students. It is similar in style to Interchange, but better. Same publisher. Give Alice at Cambridge Press a call. Let me know if u need her number.

I think coursebooks have a lot of drawbacks (unless you are working on reading skills). If your classroom has a computer lab, or you have a screen, or you can assign to the student's own devices (BYOD - bring your own device), I'd try online.

I've been helping build http://www.englishcentral.com (register as a teacher to get the tools) You are welcome to try it out. We'll be launching courses in a few weeks. Click of a button, assign students an online course and get all the data you'll ever need about what they are doing and how their English is. Right now, just build your own course by selecting videos and inviting students.
