Hello

Most of my classes are kids, but I have one advanced adult conversation class. Does anyone have any texts they can recommend for initiating in-class discussions? The classes are long- 90 minutes- so it's too much time to just spin interesting, thought provoking questions to discuss. I'm thinking of books that perhaps have interesting, thought provoking native-speaker level English reading passages that can be read in a group, gone over for new expressions or vocabulary, and then discussed in the group.

Thank you for any recommendations of books that have worked well for you.

Pablo

Try: "Lets Talk" or "Lets Argue"

Both sound like what you are looking for.

http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=34042&highlight=conversation%2C+books

that might help.

I had an advanced ajuma class once and I would have each student take turns on providing material for conversation, usually from the internet.

I also used Discussions A-Z
http://www.amazon.com/Discussions-Advanced-Activities-Cambridge-Collection/dp/0521559790/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpt_10

However, make sure the get the audio CD that goes along with it. It helps out a lot.

I think videos are great for fostering discussion.

I've used True Tube http://www.truetube.co.uk a lot with advanced students. Very clear topics for debate.

I'm coming out with a workbook for this class on EnglishCentral. http://www.englishcentral.com/class/discussit

But until then, you can pretty easily come up with the obvious discussion questions for each. + your students will be able to speak the videos for homework/assignment/practice.

You don't have to enroll, first time, just close the lightbox. But if you enroll I'll upgrade you and you can try it out as Premium.

Small Group Discussion Topics for Korean Students:

http://books.google.co.uk/books/about/Small_group_discussion_topics_for_Korean.html?id=6pV3AAAACAAJ

This book works. There's a short reading at the beginning of each chapter and then some discussion questions, and students respond VERY well to the topics because they're about Korean issues/problems. Topics like Chinese knock-offs of Korean products were even popular with the Chinese students that I taught. And I learned a lot! Lots of fun to teach.

TED videos are good, too (a lot of students already watch them).
