Just wanted to say hello as a newbie on the forum.
I posted this in the General section already but figured it might help for the people browsing in the Tech section as well since it's an often asked issue.
I saw the news today regarding the new ruling that allows for the use of a cellphone that was purchased outside the country by an individual for a private use in Korea as long as they submit a form and without paying any fees. The phone won't have to go through a testing. Also, it seems it will greatly reduce the waiting time of typical 30 days.
It reads that the ruling will go in affect in January.
This will help a lot of people newly coming to the country.

| Our ID numbers wouldn't be sufficient? You need your resident number for pretty much everything official you do here. |

spoke to my korean gf, she said that as of february we wont need to have to pay 400,000w to activate anymore.
she didnt give me the specifics, but she mentioned something along the lines of as long as it is unlocked, we're good to go. |

I'm pretty sure you would still have to get that phone whitelisted. That means going to that Korean website and entering in the phone's IMEI number (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Mobile_Equipment_Identity) and then after that you could take it to a phone store and get it activated. It seems each person can only register 1 phone for personal use. |

That's awesome! I wonder what the phone fee will be? Just negotiate a monthly fee and sign the contract? |

im a little surprised that no one has reported back yet? NO ONE has a foreign cell phone that they were interested in activating....?

| Does this apply to the iPad as well? I currently tether it to my iPhone but wouldn't mind paying a bit and getting a SIM card for it (to not waste the iPhone's battery). |
