So how does all that work out? Are there even gay bars in Korea? From my Scruff iphone app research there are some gays haha.
Obviously, I'm there to teach and experience the culture, so it's not like a lack of gay culture/population/whatever will be the end of the world... just would be unique to experience.
Besides, there are always foreign businessmen! |

There's one street in Itaewon that has some gay bars, and I've heard there are some in Hongdae as well.
I live in Sanbon and there's nothing resembling a gay bar around here. Many Koreans will claim that there are no gay Koreans. Seoul's your best bet, but it's only about an hour to Itaewon from Sanbon, so you'll be fine. Moreover, if you hang out at the foreigner bars there are a few gay guys around, and they typically know some other guys, so you can establish a network of sorts. This is what I've gathered from a couple of my close friends here being gay, anyway. |

That's what I was expecting the case to be. Like I said, my friends are all "where are the gay bars?" but it's not like a dealbreaker to have to go to Seoul. I know Asia really isn't "we're here, we're queer," so it's not like I was planning to go hand in hand through the streets with my new gaysian lover.
Where do you teach and live etc? Can you private message me? I'm starting the transition now and am curious to know how yours went with arrival, getting established blah blah blah. Thanks!

I somehow found out a gay neighborhood. Jongro 3 Ga subway station, at night there's a bunch of pojang machas lined up. It starts right infront of Nagwon Sanga (the place that sells instruments and other musical shit). Apparently that block has been the Gay Central of Seoul for a long, long time. I had no idea until a few weeks ago I was drinking alone and the owner kept coming on to me. Anyway he explained that there are gay bars all over the place and after 11 PM it's a homo party there.
I think that's where you want to go. |

You know, I'm really starting to wonder about that. I hear that SO often on this site, but can't recall a Korean actually saying that to me. |

Yeah... my Korean friends all acknowledge the existence of gay people, but maybe that's because they're cosmopolitan enough to have foreign friends...? My students also like to talk about gays, but maybe that's because they're middle schoolers...? |

I hear this all the time, but I do not necessarily put it on Koreans. Always this is from crazy bible-bashing Christians no matter their nationality. I think the only reason that I tend to hear it more here is that there are more people who are serious about their Christianity than where I lived back home.
In fact, my first principal and his wife were so insistent that no korean person was gay that they would not even believe my korean friend, who is gay, when he joined us for dinner and told them himself.
As for the OP, in Seoul there is a pretty big gay scene. In the smaller cities, not so much. |

Maybe its because I was in the 'wrong place at the wrong time' (late at night) so to speak or the earring in my left ear but I was approached by a gay korean. It was near a bus station. I was lost and finding my around.
I told my boss about it and he said, by and large, the areas around bus stations in many cities have an underground gay community. I don't know if its true, but I've heard it more than once.
Seoul may be a whole other different kettle of fish. My recommendation is go to gay sites. Google for forums that have an Asian section or simply try and find some gay Korean American sites and ask them if they know where it is in Seoul. |

I heard it from one adult student. But I dont think she really believed it, it wasnt like she was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad nsaying that there are no gays in Iran. |

I've heard it from folks who haven't lived abroad and are completely inexperienced with with reality. Working with a couple gay guys it likely comes up a lot more, but we've heard the whole "that doesn't happen here" thing fairly often (usually from the same guys who start feeling my buddies up after a few drinks). |

Oh, yeah. That place. I think it's full of old dudes though, don't go there! |

lol...yeah, I noticed that. All the pojang macha stall owners were old gay men. I didn't notice at first but after being told about the street, I could see it. Also at night it's ALL men. There are a few couples here and there, but it's ALL men.
Even if you're not trying to go find a date or whatever, I think it's still worth a trip. I went to Nagwon and after I had to sit down at one of the pojang machas because the atmosphere is really nice. It was raining that night, the stalls are set up all the way down the road and it was just nice to sit and drink there. |

Foreigners (specifically on this forum) claim that Koreans claim there are no gays in Korea. Pretty much all the Koreans I know are aware that there are gay people among the Korean population. |

I've never had a Korean tell me there are no gays in Korea. Many foreigners have said that they were told this by Koreans. I can only come to the conclusion I always come to when other foreigners claim to have different experiences in Korean than I have: they must be making it up. |
