|

Hi all,
Just a quick question about vacation time while working at a hagwon:
My girlfriend and I are strongly considering teaching in Korea, but not for another year or so. I know the standard amount of vacation time given while working at a hagwon is 10 days, usually given as a week off here and one there (the dates of course are chosen by the hagwon).
However, it is likely that one of our siblings will be getting married while we are abroad. If that is the case, is it at all possible to negotiate and be given choice of the vacation dates? If not both weeks, at least one? Has anyone had a similar experience? |

Unless it coincides with the hagwan's planned holiday the chances of both of you getting time off (the hagwan losing 2 teachers at the same time during classes) is effectively "0".

Whilst ttompatz is correct in many cases, I know of hakwan teachers that have negotiated such terms but it usually has to be agreed on very much in advance. It will differ from workplace to workplace and if it is a strong deciding issue for you I would approach it from the get go with potential employers and see what they say. Not impossible. |

I had a friend in a similar situation, their school allowed an extended vacation however they had to provide a legal and acceptable sub, and pay for them out of there own pocket. A very expensive vacation. |

Make sure you ask your hagwon before you sign your contract about its planned vacations. If you plan on traveling abroad, you'll need to make reservations in advance. You won't be able to make last minute reservations unless you buy a package tour (which can be incredibly cheap, actually). |
