Today I went out and bought the IPTime N8004 Wireless Router and the IPTime 5008 Switch.

I hooked up the router and switch and have a sweet connection. When I setup the 5ghz signal I put it on channel 149. I was able to get a 300mbps connection (according to the task bar icon) and when I went on SpeedTest.net I got a nice fast connection. MUCH faster than my previous router.

When I went to put a password on the connection, the icon box in the task bar said I had dropped back to the low 54mbps, and when I checked speedtest my speed had dropped by over 50%!

So, I guess my question is.... How can I password protect my 5ghz SSID, and what are the best settings (channel...etc) to use?

Also, how about setting up a 2.4ghz signal? What settings should I be using for that (channel, etc)? Thanks a lot for helping a noob Very Happy

I haven't messed with the newest/greatest routers, but I have some experience with the basic ones.

Sounds like a software bug that they'll have to work out in an update. Just a guess. I do know that adding security on a typical connection does slow it some.

If you can't work it out, my solution would be to just enable MAC address filtering so that no other machine than yours can connect to it. That is not a fully-secure measure, but most likely, you won't have issues with someone trying to break in and use it.

Do that until you find a fix. If you're doing something like internet banking, then switch to a hardwired computer for that, or enable security on your router temporarily.

As to the best settings/channel, I have always read that you should try to stay at least 3 channels away from other signals in the area. It sounds like the newer technology has more channels to address the problem of having so many routers/electronics in an area. So basically, any channel you can get a good signal from is fine, I'd imagine.

And another note -- my router has the ability to adjust the power output. Yours probably does, too. I turn mine down to the lowest setting possible to get the a satisfactory signal in the areas I need it. I do this because I know that once the signal passes my walls to my neighbors, they will get a really weak signal to work with should someone try to hack it. In short, it won't be worth the effort for them. Also, gosh only knows how safe it is to be bombarding my family with that much more electronic radiation at high levels, so the lower the better.

Came across this, which could explain it...

In particular, the higher frequency wireless signals of 5GHz networks do not penetrate solid objects nearly as well as 2.4GHz signals, limiting their reach inside homes.

Basically, 5ghz connections are not as good over distance or through walls. If you have a wall between you and your router, that could account for the speed drop at the 5ghz speed.

Interestingly, the ancient old "A" band is already at 5ghz.

Wireless security (WEP, WPA) hinders wireless thoroughput.

If you want to keep the speed and be secure, try:

Disable wireless security
Disable SSID Broadcast
Setup a MAC address filter and Whitelist your devices

That should keep your speeds real high. Only drawback is when your friends come over and they want to use your wireless, you gotta add their Mac Addresses into the whitelist.
