Hi everyone,
A few days ago I decided to give a go in applying for ESL jobs Korea for spring 2013. Most job postings have March 2nd, 2013 as a starting date. I just got my fingerprints done yesterday, and could, apply for the FBI background check tomorrow (Jan 2nd), but if it can take up to 2 months, that doesn't really leave me much room to play (then, another week on apostille, and around 2 weeks for E-2 visa).
Would you suggest that my best bet is to shoot for fall 2013 instead, or is there still some flexibility with the March 2nd starting date? Specifically, I got a response from a GEPIK rep. so it would presumably be in a public school sector.
Thank you,
Slava |

You can apply, conveyor belt system, and get what you are assigned to. In that case, you might be late, you might be too early.
Another approach is you take command of your life, choose the school yourself, and don't let others assign or command you how to run your life. Take control of it. Empower yourself to get a job anytime of the year you want, according to your choosing.
Search for openings when you have your documents. You really want to wait 8 months? |

Don't want to wait 8 months, but I was worried that if I missed the spring window, I would have no choice but to wait for the fall. (I'm new to this). I guess the question that comes up for me is... will there be openings on rolling basis for, say, May, June etc... or is it generally open for March & August.
Taking command of my life definitely sounds like a good plan By this, do you mean, contacting schools directly? If that's a practice that works then I'm all about it.
ps. Also anyone's experience, do you prefer public or private?
Cheers. |

The only window you miss is the one you close yourself. Stop thinking in terms of what other people want you to do. Think about what you can do for yourself. If you want a job in March, open the March window and see what is available.

There are conveyor belt jobs, you put yourself through the ESL industrial machine, and when it's your turn, you will be assigned a job, location, and contract. If you disobey soldier, you might not be hired again through that group. Do you want that?
You could find a job on your own, request photos of the classrooms, office, school, apartment, talk with the school, get transportation information, as well as an idea of the schedule, students you will be teaching, and even visit if you are in Korea.
Your choice, your window.

You: I want to teach in Korea, I have my documents.
Recruiter: We have School A, here is a contract
You: I checked, and it is terrible, any other schools?
Recruiter: We have Schools B, C, D, E, and F
You: I looked at them, and E sounds good (get above info I listed and reassess)

You are spending too much time with formulas.
1) You might not want to take what is assigned. I don't.
2) You might not want to follow what another teacher did, because in all honesty, both avenues are doable.
It boils down to you asking yourself what you want. Find out what is available. Order your meal instead of asking others to order for you.
Public school jobs have a set schedule more so than privates. There are other things, but the first step you need to do is get your documents, and then dig.
Dig, dig, dig. Get your documents and buy a shovel. When your documents arrive, try the steps I outlined above. Talk to recruiters. We can't tell you how to run your life, whether you should go with SMOE, GEPIK, EPIK, or a hagwon job.
That is something you need to decide for yourself. Better to do that before you come to Korea. |
