we went to the tax office to find out that (unsurprisingly) our bosses weren't paying the taxes that they were deducting from our paychecks.

the tax office said that they needed the 'business number' (NOT the phone number of the business) in order to continue to pursue the matter. they said that it was a 'private number' and therefore they couldn't ask another agency for it.

i'm wondering is this their business license number? does anyone know how many digits it is? does anyone have an idea of how we can get it? (we're not able to go back into the hogwan). i'm thinking online somewhere....

please help!! thanks!

IF they mean the business registration number then it is on the business registration. The local gu office should have it.

If they mean the tax ID number for the business then the NTS has it.
Your bad luck to get a lazy git at the tax office. Contact the foreign tax advocate at the NTS ( http://www.nts.go.kr ). You will need something to back up your claim and the business address.

You know you will lose your job once you do this right? Is it worth it? Also, consider the fact that taxes might not be due. Some pay yearly, others quarterly. If it's been more than 8-10 months though, he's probably been pocketing it. The tax office might know when the taxes are due from the business. Let me know how things turn out. I'm almost sure my boss isn't paying either like most hagwon owners and I plan on making a trip next week to find out.

thanks bbunce for your concern. i'll let you know how it turns out. if i still had a job, i'd probably be a lot more careful. they gave me four days notice that the hogwan would be closing down after working for 9 months there. all and all, i can say with confidence that both of our bosses have little to no moral fiber Very Happy after all of the stunts we've allowed them to pull with us. anyway, i'll keep everyone posted and when we leave korea i'm def going to let others know to stay far far away... Shocked
