Hello all! I will be traveling from Atlanta to Daejeon on Monday/Tuesday of next week. I was hoping that someone has taken the same (or a very similar) trip and could give me some advise. The flight goes from ATL to Charlotte, NC and then to JFK (NY) before heading to Incheon. The two flights in the US are on US Airways. The flight from NY to Incheon is on Asiana. I'm trying to figure out baggage.
First, since this flight has two legs in the US, will the international baggage guidelines apply at my original check-in?
Second, is this considered a trans-Atlantic or trans-Pacific flight? You get 2 bags free for trans-Pacific, but only one for trans-Atlantic.
Thanks for any advise in advance! |

did you book the flights all together? if so then yes, the international baggage guidelines will apply at your original check-in.
the flight will be trans-pacific. |

We just booked tickets from Toronto to Busan and the baggage allowance was 1 checked bag (23k / 50 pounds) per passenger + 1 carry-on.
This is with an American Carrier but Air Canada has similar baggage rules.
Second checked bag costs vary from 60-75 USD per trip.
As for you OP...it seems pretty clear on US Airways own website:
http://www.usairways.com/en-US/traveltools/baggage/baggagepolicies.html
You get 2 free checked bags and count yourself lucky considering recent baggage allowance trends!
As mentionned earlier, unless your flights were booked separately (US airways then Asiana) you get 2 bags as per US Airways policy for a transpacific flight.
As for Asiana they also allow 2 checked bags:
http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Asiana/baggage.php
Odds are you check your luggage at the first airport and only claim it back in Incheon.
Oh and since you are crossing the PACIFIC ocean to get to Korea its a transpacific flight.... |

iselynjenniep is right. As long as your flights are booked together, it won't be a problem. Flights out of JFK fly over NY, Canada, down Alaska towards Japan so it's Pacific.
For peace of mind, call either your travel agent or Asiana and be sure to get names and numbers in case you run into problems at your point of departure! |

I'm fairly sure your advice is flawed on this one. I've never heard of an international flight originating from/going to the States that didn't allow two bags, regardless of carrier. I just flew the worst of the worst (China Eastern) and was still allowed two checked bags. |

Well check this out my man:
Delta for a ECONOMY class tickets originating in the US/Canada and traveling to Asia you get ONE free checked bag.
http://www.delta.com/traveling_checkin/baggage/checked/index.jsp
American Airline:http://www.aa.com/i18n/travelInformation/baggage/baggageAllowance.jsp?anchorEvent=false&from=Nav
Their allowances are a bit better but its unclear if Korea is included in the Travel to or from Japan and China. If so they still allow 2 bags.
Air Canada:
Since September 2011: all other itineraries:
Tickets issued on or after September 7, 2011: Check a 2nd bag for $70 CAD (per direction).
Again Japan is on an exlusion list and passangers going there or traveling from there get 2 free bags.
United also changed their policy in 2011 and allow 1 free checked bag for economy class tickets for flight from US-Canada and going to Asia. Japan destination gets 2 bags again.
http://pss.united.com/CMS/en-US/travel/Pages/CheckedBaggage.aspx
Japan Airlines allows 2 bags for free.
Korean Air still allowd 2 bags for free.
Bascially the industry trend for North American carriers is to reduce free checked luggage allowances to one bag for economy class tickets. The second bag typically costs 60-75 USD per trip payable at the counter.
This has been happening since 2011 on most international routes. Its annoying as heck if you are used to having 2 free checked bags!!! |

This is the reason why I always go with Asian carriers--better service and with a smile, too. |

True. Were I traveling alone I would choose asian airlines too but with 2 adults and 2 kids, price becomes an issue and asian carriers are typically more expensive.
To be fair, we have had zero issues with american carriers in general. WE have experienced courteous service onboard and off flight. Perhaps it is because we travel with 2 kids.
For example, my wife traveled to Korea last year with our two kids, I joined her 2 weeks later due to work. She flew American Airlines and they had a mechanical issue in Dallas that led to a 6 hour delay. Well during the delay they provided her with vouchers for meals at the airport. Once she reached Narita she had missed her connection. The head steward went to see her prior to landing and handed her hotel vouchers, and vouchers for dinner and BK at the hotel. Once de deplaned, a stewardess was there with her boarding passes for the next day. All in all excellent service. |
