I've googled some older threads but thought I would post asking for some more specific information. Does anyone have any experience or information on how much a brain MRI costs? I have heard it is usually over 1,000,000won but I hope someone knows of somewhere that can do it cheaper. I live in Bucheon so can travel to Seoul or Incheon, and anywhere in between. Any help would be great.
Thanks. |

Call the Foreign Help Center at Seoul National University Hospital. They're super nice:

My son had a brain MRI at SoonchoonHyang University Hospital, Hannam Dong, in November 2011 and it cost 864,856won. There was no insurance rebate on that.
Definitely worth it as he went through 7hrs of neurosurgery the following day.

Thanks for all the replies. I phoned the Seoul National Uni Hospital this morning and they said the MRI would cost from 700,000 to 1,000,000won. I decided to try a local clinic near where I live which has a sign advertising MRI and CT scans. They offered an MRI scan for 350,000won. I agreed and got it done immediately. I got my results, which were all clear, and they gave me my MRI scan on a CD. It means I can take it to another doctor for a second opinion if I so desire. The clinic is across from the Homeplus in Jungdong and diagonally across from Lotte Department store.
Sorry for the long post but hopefully this can help others in the future.
I'll include some key words for google searches:

Don't apologize! This is a good post. Thanks for update and advice on where to go? Can we ask why the scan needed? |

I had one several years back that was around 400,000 I think. It may have been less. I also went to the hospital attached to the university where I work and got a discount. |

Why are you getting a brain MRI? Do you believe you have cancer or something? Are you getting constant headaches? Seems like a fairly serious thing to be getting while on a one year contract, especially if you need follow up work. |

What a strange post. I'll keep the reasons I got the MRI scan to myself but I'll be sure to run any further medical treatment I seek past you in the future. |

Nominated for dumbest post of the month
Good luck OP. On some procedures you have to appreciate the lower costs in Korea. I paid about 60% less for a first-rate surgery here than it would have cost in America, even with decent insurance. Still pleasantly amazed 6 months later |

Why was it strange and dumb? He seemed to be legitimately concerned. Was it the "one year contract" statement? |

I was actually legitimately curious. One would think that if you needed serious work done, you would do it at home where you have a family and social circle to help you through something major. Anyways, people here on this site are nothing but a bunch of snappy arseholes. I didn't actually care about what you needed done, just that if you needed serious medical care, one would think that they would go where they could actually communicate 100% with the doctors and nurses.
I was also wondering why so many people needed brain MRIs, but then you get the Dave's response where people are dumb shi tes. |

Those procedures typically cost between 800 000W and 1M Won and are not covered by basic medical insurance.
I hope it all turns out well for you and please ignore the Daves idiocy that popped up in this thread. |

I'm still not sure what you're getting at. Are you saying I should wait till I go home to get an MRI scan? Back home the waiting lists for MRI scans are very long. Therefore I got an MRI scan in Korea. I spoke to the nurses and doctor in a mix of Korean and English. Thanks to their efforts I understood the results clearly. If the results had been positive for any illness I would have returned home for further medical assistance. I even got the MRI on a CD so I can show a doctor back home if I deem it necessary.
As for people needing brain MRIs, I would think they are suffering from symptoms that could be related to their brain and therefore want an MRI scan to check if anything is wrong. |

Come on Seoulman. Share some of your most private medical history with strangers on a public internet forum. What's the big deal?
This is good info you have posted here about where to get a scan done in an emergency without paying a huge out of pocket expense. Also getting it on a CD is great because I'm sure most people in this situation will want more than one doctor to review it. It probably wouldn't hurt to have someone else look at it, just to be sure. Because of the difference in prices between there and the hospital, it does make me wonder why it is so much cheaper. |
