I don't think any of us should have to do any f-4 or e-2 drugs test or HIV test as a requirement of law. If schools want to do that, then fine. But honesty, what tangible differences does it make? |

Actually, until 2010, people wishing to immigrate to the US had to undergo an HIV test and would also be declined if they tested positive.
HIV is a serious illness that affects millions of people. It is a matter of public safety, for one, and for another reason, if a foreigner did have complications because of HIV, the Korean government would have to try to help them and may not have the resources or money to do so for a non-citizen.
Also, many employers in the US also do drug tests... why would it be any different in a country that also prohibits the use of illegal drugs? |

Doesnt really do a great deal of good though considering the US has the highest drug use figures in the world, and that the test for most drugs excluding THC, can be beaten by abstaining for 7 days. |

But you wouldn't need to "beat a test" if you weren't doing something illegal. It's illegal... don't do it or get another job. I don't understand why this is a hard concept for people to grasp |

Its not a hard concept, and I dont do it. What I am saying though is the test doesnt stop people from using drugs, which is obvious by looking at the US. What stops people from doing them is lack of availability. |

Sorry~ didn't mean to sound like I was jumping all over your comment~ I totally agree, though I've definitely met some people that weren't hampered by the lack of availability >.> |

I just don't want to pay for it or waste my free time dealing with it.
I think my medical cost was like 75000 won. not the end of the world. But if the drug test is like 25000 of that then i am one very pissed off e2 visa holder. So my problem is with the application of the visa medical exam, not that it is required. |

If it's any consolation...hakwon owners don't like all these new laws either...they shaved their heads in protest last year about it.

To comply with new revisions to the law, all hagwons (after-school education institutions) now have to post fees online, issue receipts and provide a detailed breakdown of all fees when requested to do so, reported the JoongAng Daily today.
Hagwons must also run criminal background checks and obtain medical reports and copies of college diplomas before hiring foreign teachers.
Wait, they werent doing this already?
In protest at the reforms, hagwon owners shaved their heads in front of the National Assembly earlier this month and delayed the passing of the revisions last week by personally visiting members of the National Assembly... |

My hand slipped and I made a typo, and found this by accident:

Right, but US immigration tested people BEFORE giving them a visa and letting them into the country. They didn't kick people out for testing positive. There's a difference. For most of the world, once you let someone in and give them the right to live there, you have to treat them the same as anyone else in the country. Once you accept them, they're your responsibility. You can't kick them out later because they're sick. Korea is one of the very few countries in the world that will revoke your visa and kick you out for being sick. Almost no other country (not even 3rd world countries) will do that. Korea has been criticized in the past for doing it but it's not important for the Korean government so they ignore what other countries say on this matter.
As far as it being a school policy to test teacher, I'm totally ok with that..... as long as they do it for everyone, including the Korean staff. |
