I hate credit cards and don't want one but I've heard that you can change your bank card to a "check card" which acts in the same way as a credit card but without credit (it just takes money out of your bank account).
Since PayPal sucks and most Korean sites want credit cards, does anyone have experience with this? How should I go about asking? I asked my bank before and they had no idea what I was talking about (IBK).
Thanks. |

Just go to a different branch and/or bank. Check cards are fairly common. |

It's a debit card, nothing more nothing less, although for an unknown reason the term 'check card' stuck with Korean institutions. Take your ID and bank book with you, write it down in Korean - '체크카드' - and any bank employee in her right mind should understand what you want.
Fair warning, though: by mentioning PayPal, you must be thinking of online purchases. Debit cards work for online payments in most cases, but there are a few exceptions where only true credit cards are accepted. One example - adding credit over the internet to pre-pay mobile with LG U+. |

A Debit Card and a Checkcars are 2 different things. Although a checkcard can also be considered Debit card, not all Debit cards are Checkcards.
Debit Card usually allows for EFT Point of Sale Transactions. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EFTPOS). You run your card, enter your PIN and the money gets withdrawn from your account.
A Checkcard works like a credit card, with a Visa or Mastercard Logo, and you don't enter a PIN, you just sign like a regular checkcard.
Some Checkcards also funtion like a Debit card with the EFT POS functionality.
There is a difference between the 2. The OP wants a Checkcard, not a DebitCard. If you go to a bank and ask for a DEBIT CARD, they will most likely give you a card that will only work with EFTPOS transactions and not have a Visa/MAstercard logo on it to make Checkcard transactions. |

I want a "check card" that works like a MasterCard so I can buy products over Steam/Origin. I don't have a credit card or else I'd use that. I also don't want a credit card and am sick and tired of PayPal and bank transfers.
Anyway, I went to IBK and they said they only offer a "BC" card. I've never heard of a BC card before today and of course, nothing outside of Korea has either. They don't offer a MasterCard or Visa check card and when I asked, they kept offering me credit cards.
Anyone know which banks offer Mastercard/Visa CHECK cards?
Cheers. |

I don't think it matters anyway. I discovered that this BC card they gave me CAN be used for internet banking on some of my sites, however the internet purchasing system is horrible!
If you use a Korean site, it makes you download ActiveX programs (INI pay or whatever) and the Korean font doesn't load properly which makes most things look like gibberish which I can't read.
So I tried paying and it wanted my phone number and a bunch of other info. Every time I put it in, it gave me a gibberish error message (unreadable).
I think purchasing stuff online is more a pain in the butt than going to the department store. I'm just doing this to save money. |

Korean CheckCards, as far as I know, can NOT be used for overseas purchases. You would need a Korean Credit Card to purchase overseas.
The KEB Global Checkcard lets you withdraw money overseas at ATM's, but IIRC, it can not be used for purchases. |

I'm trying to buy it from a Korean website. I never said I was trying to buy it from a foreign website.
Anyway, Korean online shopping is horrible.
I was trying to use Gmarket to buy the product too. I couldn't even get to the payment screen on that site because it kept telling me to update my address, I did, pressed "submit" and then everything disappeared. I tried it again and again in Google Chrome and in IE. After an hour or so of that I gave up.
I think that the "Check Card" I have (the BC one) is totally valid, I just can't buy stuff online because Korean online shopping is so horrible that it won't work. I either get confounded by errors or it won't accept the information I put in.
I guess foreigners just have to shop in person here or get our Korean friends to help us... |

1. I was giving you a heads up so that you don't post 2 weeks later with a "HELP! My Korean Checkcard won't work on AMAZON!" or similar thread.
2. Internet Shopping here is easy. You click "buy". A popup comes up. You enter your card details and security password. Click "submit". Its no more difficult than putting on a pair of pants. You need someone to do THAT for you too?
Frankly, I'm surprised you even made it out of Incheon airport, judging by how easily you are throwing up your arms and giving up about internet shopping. People are trying to help you with useful information but it looks like you are just throwing a tantrum and waiting for someone else to do it for you. |

@pkang, if its a VISA/MASTER check card, you can use it overseas.
@myenglishisno, if interested, just go to citibank, open a checking account, ask for a VISA CHECK card.

pkang0202 - I've been here for as long as you have and have hardly any problems in Korea. It's just online banking.
It's not that it's difficult and I can't read the Korean or whatever, I can. It's that it DOESN'T WORK. For example, danawa.com told me that it will only accept hangul names for registration.
Not much I can do about that, is there?
Gmarket.co.kr won't let me change my address. I saw other threads about this including on Google. I think I have to contact their support on that one.
Not much I can do about that, either.
Origin makes me install several programs that don't display Korean text properly (just gibberish) so I can't even read the instructions.
Again, not much I can do about that.
Quit being a douche. |
