South Korea's plunder of the Southern Ocean

A South Korean fishing boat that illegally took $600,000 worth of toothfish from the Southern Ocean has been fined by its own government $1600 which pressured other nations to keep it off an international list of banned boats.

Insung No 7 has been exposed in an official report in which nations including New Zealand, the European Union and the US demanded Seoul clean its act up in the wake of "many incidences" of non-compliance involving its flagged vessels.

The New Zealand Department of Labour is investigating a Korean fishing company after a study revealed its employees were being beaten, raped and forced to eat rotten food in slum-like conditions.
Seoul-based Sajo Oyang Corporation, part of Korea�s giant Sajo Group, denied the stories of widespread abuse. It claimed the researchers from the University of Auckland Business School were known to be against foreign fishing, and it had not been asked to offer evidence.
The researchers interviewed mainly Indonesian men from 27 vessels who gave gruesome accounts of extreme physical violence and verbal abuse.
"Officers are vicious... factory manager just rapped this 12-kilogram stainless steel pan over his head, splits the top of his head, blood pouring out everywhere...," one informant said.
Others were sexually abused, one describing being forced to "massage" the captain every day.

I think the seas are a great resource.

The Japanese, Koreans and Chinese love fish. However there being so many bellys to fill, our fish could go extinct.

We must ensure that this resource is kept renewable.

Greedy fishermen trying to make a fast buck should be punished severely.

It would probably get in the way of your agenda to give a more objective view of the first story here, but it's apparent that they were fined for over-fishing, not for fishing in an area they weren't allowed to fish in. They just took too much.
