The first time I ever stepped foot in Olde Stompers Rock Spot must have been around the end of 2006. I had just come back to Korea to begin work at a public school in Northern Seoul. It was the beginning of my second year in Korea. Dakota John, an old high school friend who was also teaching in Korea at the time, and I were out wandering aimlessly around Itaewon on a late-December evening, with no particular place in mind and in need of a drink and a place to discuss the rigors of expat life.
If I remember right, it was my first time back in Itaewon since I had moved back to Korea earlier that November. At the time, I was spending an increasing amount of my free-time in Hongdae and had basically given up all hope of ever finding a respectable bar to have a drink or see a show at in Itaewon.
It was a bitter cold Sunday evening, one of those winter days in Seoul where the sun doesnt know whether it should have even come up or not, barely rising up over the horizon for a few hours in the afternoon, lingering lazily over the city for a couple hours, before sneaking off behind Namsan and leaving a biting wind and the cold emptiness of neon modernity mixed with the sinking feeling of another work week fast approaching. |
Read about one of the better bars in all of Korea over @asiapundits http://www.asiapundits.com/regions/korea/olde-stompers-rock-spot-a-postmortem-review-part-i/

Interesting enough read, however I really think the writer should have focused more on the fact that from Itaewon the sun was apparently seen to set behind Namsan. He missed an incredible story there.

Sorry I just went ahead and changed "Itaewon" to "Seoul" and that should solve any problems with the misplaced sun. |

I was just having a little fun with you. It was a good read. I think it's great in many ways Itaewon is being gentrified and opening up but I do at times miss the combat zone type of feel it used to have. And I was first there in '97. Plenty of people would claim it had already been tamed by then. |

I am so glad Hooker Hill will get demolished soon. The sooner the better. |

So stompers is closed?
I remember the original stompers. man that place was busy and so was the original pollys, then again so was the hill. dead now though.
well I guess Old Town is still the bar from star wars at 6am packing them all in.
I keep hearing from people that Itaewon is set for demolishing , everything behind the main street right down to the Han.
but come on. I really doubt that is ever gonna happen.
I mean if seoul is into re building cities, they should start in down town seoul.
over there by eulgiro 3 ga and right up to Dongdaemun. talk about a dump. |

If you took a helicopter ride over Seoul and saw all the major redevelopment going on in Yongsan, Jongno, Myeong-dong, Dongdaemun, Sindang, Wangsimni...basically all over the central districts of the city you'd know this is already the case. |
