I will be heading to Jeju in 11 days to start an ESL teaching job. I have researched the cost of living on the mainland of South Korea and I am wondering if it is same in Jeju since it is more of a tourist destination. Any information will be appreciated. |

Hi Wanda
This is going to sound very strange but I've been sent a copy of your contract instead of a personalized one for the position @ Jeju. Wondering if you have left already and if you can give me some light on the situation?
I've been in contact with "Simon"
Thanks! |

Well... that is a little strange; however, he may have wanted to show you what his contract looks like. I guess there are a few questions to ask first:
1. Are you already in South Korea? When I was looking for a job here, he was looking for someone who was already here and I was still in Jacksonville Florida. I was willing to pay for my own flight to get here but that is uncommon as most companies will provide air fare.
There are currently three English teachers. John has been at the school for 7 or 8 months. He is married to a Korean woman from Jeju and has been here for 7 years. I have been here for two weeks and replaced a teacher who had been teaching in Korea for three years and was ready to go back to the states. Brigid is the teacher who is leaving at the end of March and the one Simon is trying to replace.
I am happy to answer any questions you may have about my experience so far. Just let me know. |

I used to live in seogwipo. Cost of living isn't too bad. Your biggest cost will be getting off the island when you have island fever. Beautiful place though. |

Thanks for the reply Wanda! I was a little worried beforehand because of this, and also thought you may have gone there, disliked it and left early.
Now I know his isn't right I only have one question:
Would you recommend the school?
I'm not in Korea but also willing to pay for my own flights, however, he also wants me to come ASAP and do a visa run to Japan. I've heard this is quite normal.
Thanks! |
