I'd really like to go to China this summer. However, I'll have less than 6 months on my Korean ARC at that time.
I know I won't be able to get a Chinese visa from Korea; however, can I still get a Chinese visa from another country? For example, can I stop in Hong Kong on my way to mainland China and get a visa there with less than 6 months left on my Korean ARC? If so, how long (on average) does it usually take to get a Chinese visa in Hong Kong?
I'm American, by the way. |

I went to that link and under visa application requirements it states:
7, Applicants without HK resident status are required to submit their applications through the Chinese Embassy or consulate office around your resident country.
Doesn't that mean if you don't have HK residency you have to do it wherever your passport is from? |

Unless the rules have changed in the last 6 months, it is possible to get a visa for China with less than 6 months on your ARC (but not less than 1 month). I went to China about 7 months ago from Korea. To be able to do it, you must go through an agent. I used Kangsan Travel and had no problems.
To do the above, you need the following (this was what I needed at the time):
Certificate of Foreign Registration (available from any Gu office. I think it cost 1,000W)
Passport with more than 6 months on it.
Copy of your ARC (front and back)
Photo
Visa fee
Completed visa application form.
I think the whole process took about 4 working days or so. You can process it up to 3 months before you go. |

Sally, the Chinese give you maximum 3-month deferral from the issue date to enter China, upon which the validity of your visa actually kicks in.
If you can narrow down your entry date to, say, a one-week window in the summer, and then count backwards, would that give you certain window of time immediately before your ARC runs down below 6 months? |

Unfortunately, my situation is trickier than that. I want to go to China at the end of July. My ARC expires at the beginning of July. I'm hoping to extend my contract with my current school until the fall (less than 6 months' extension). So there's no way that I'll have 6 months remaining on my ARC at the time that I apply for a China visa. |
