I had read plenty of horror stories, been advised, and made aware that schools tend to look for "Barbie and Ken" types first and foremost. Others had insisted that employers in bigger cities were less likely to be so superficial and/or discriminatory, but alass, no such luck for me.
I'm Hispanic, not White in the slightest.
There are three other English teachers at my school. After three weeks, I can say that there are definite differences in treatment between us all. One of them is hasseled periodically because she's an ethnic Korean, another is shunned by the Korean staff for being unusual and has been deemed unattractive, the other is beloved by all, and I'm ignored and left to my own devices.
Huh, I suppose being left alone is better than some alternatives.
No question here, just making observations. |

Question here: are all 4 ET's female? 1 = she. The other 3? Just curious about the variables vs. controls here. |

No, they aren't all female. There's one man. |

Being Hispanic has nothing to do with being white, black or mixed. You can be Hispanic and be white, black or mixed. It is not a race.
It's like saying I'm American and that makes me not black. |

This. I remember there was a Mexican American girl from Cali who posted here a few years ago about how distraught she was that the manager of her hagwon told her she was white and was jealous of her white skin, refusing to acknowledge that she wasn't white. Good stuff. |

The Hispanic designation does not really fall along the white-black axis. That's precisely WHY the OP clarifies that she was "Hispanic, not white."
The OP is going to read the strange responses in this thread and get the entirely justified impression that it's a hangout for white people only.
To the substance of the OP, yes the Korean market wants white teacher. I recommend you try China before you entirely give up on teaching in Asia, though. |

Maybe, but it's obtuse to assume that American racial classifications hold any weight whatsoever in Korea. The point is that it's odd to note that one is Hispanic in the Korean context, as it doesn't mean anything in Korea and is a meaningless term to Koreans. |
