I am currently watching the show in its entirety for the fourth time and for the life of me I can't understand why I love it so much. I loathe EVERY character in this show, even the priest in season 1 was a douche. I despise organized crime. I even hate the aesthetics the characters of the show hold. I am not of Italian heritage. And yet, I have to watch it in its entirety at least once a year. WHY? It's over 50 hours of my life that I could spend on other things.

"Over 50 hours" for each time you watched the series ---- at the end of this viewing it'll be more than 200 hours!
It's not a bad way to spend your time, in my opinion. It's so well-written, and the characters are very interesting. I think that another strength is that it makes viewers question what they would do in the same situation. Think about Melfi and her incident in the underground parking lot. Would you have let it go, or would you have had a certain someone exact revenge?
I've watched the series twice now, and the second time around I caught a lot of little things I hadn't before.
Have fun!

Never got it myself. I was told so many times how good it was, I was expecting a kind of Goodfellas on tv by the time I sat down to watch it. I found the first episode, about the ducks, pretty dull but persevered due to all the hype and watched another. Not much better so I gave up.

Because I'm in Korea, and it really reminds me of home. Regular talking Americans. No "I'm fine thank you."

Definitely good TV, but I ran out of steam about five or six episodes from the end. The latter half of the final season just seemed so dismal. Like Tony's few redeeming qualities were thrown out the window in favor of only showing his monstrous side.

I only started watching it for the first time a couple of months ago. I'm hard pressed to force myself through the last bunch of episodes. (Breaking down and finally picking up Skyrim might have something to do with that...)

Had I not just finished watching the Wire (that I likely will be re-watching at some point in the future) for the first time just prior to trying out the Sopranos, I would have a higher opinion of it.

In my opinion its simply the best show on TV ever. I saw every episode of both the Wire and the Sopranos twice and I still think the Sopranos is a better show. Of course the Wire is also pure awesome. I love the shows coming out these days like Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, and Homeland, but the Sopranos set the bar for me.

the final few episodes are phenomenal, especially the second last episode and obviously the final scene is television perfection.

The characters are fantastic and some of the dialogue is brilliant. Uncle Junior and Paulie Walnuts also had me in tears.

Corrado 'Junior' Soprano: [to Warren] I saw your girl today at pet therapy. How she keep her coat so shiny?

Paulie 'Walnuts' Gualtieri: Chevy Chase. F==k ever happen to him?

Paulie: You're not gonna believe this. He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.

Pine Barrens was the best episode.

used to think it was the best series done until I watched The Wire last month. For overall quality it blows The Sopranos out of the water. I'll likely go back and do it again very soon.

Do agree Paulie was one of the best characters ever done, so many classic lines from him.

Couple of other cop shows you need to go back and take a second or third look at are The Shield and Homicide: Life on the Street (Yeah I know David Simon was the brains behind The Wire and Homicide)

Sopranos is a great show...i'vee seen it a couple times along w/other shows that have aired on HBO (they have produced some of the best Series)

i think the Sopranos, as stated above, basically gives you an outlet to step into someone else's shoes that is an extremely unique slice of life. Not many people will ever "live the life" and the one thing that kept me watching it again and again was that the real-life people the Series was loosely based on, were quoted somewhere along the lines of saying how similar the show mimicked their real lives

the only thing that was disappointing was the Ending...but in the end, it was probably the best way to have ended it

I am also addicted to The Wire. I'm on my third viewing of it.

I think the ending was clever on so many levels, not the least of which is that people are talking about it years later.

The Sopranos vs Wire arguments are moot because they are completely different types of show. Saying one is better than the other is pointless, when they are both absolute classics for a variety of reasons.
However, I think Sopranos has more repeat value because of the snappy dialogue. I don't think I could sit through The Wire again because of the unrelenting bleakness of the show.

That's part of the answer to your question, OP. The Sopranos is re-watchable b/c of its wit, whereas The Wire, which was at least the peer of the Sopranos, if not its superior, is hard to re-watch because it is so desperately and pervasively sad.

The first season is possibly the worst until the last 3 or 4 episodes (which are excellent). Season 2 onwards is unbelievably good.

I'm on my fifth viewing of the whole lot and I notice new stuff happening all the time. The charachters are fascinating and it's one of the funniest shows I've ever seen on TV.

The Wire is amazing but nowhere near as good to watch a second time as The Sopranos is. The Wire also lost it in the 5th season (although there were some dud Sopranos episodes throughout such as the "Kevin Finnerty" dream, the Italian housemade halucination and the trip to Italy).
