Indicative of today's America, and why it is currently incapable of being a competent world leader-

TODAY is my last day at Goldman Sachs. After almost 12 years at the firm first as a summer intern while at Stanford, then in New York for 10 years, and now in London I believe I have worked here long enough to understand the trajectory of its culture, its people and its identity. And I can honestly say that the environment now is as toxic and destructive as I have ever seen it. |

It's nice to see freedom of speech in action. In this country you could not write this, nor would it ever be published. |

I would hardly compare the culture of Investment Banks to that of the US. Goldman Sachs and other Investment Banks have a history. Hell, the movie Wall Street came out in 1987. You think whats happening at Goldman Sachs is anything new?
For every Goldman Sachs there are good companies that do good things.
Johnson & Johnson
The Walt Disney Company
Kraft Foods Inc.
Microsoft
PepsiCo
Apple
Hershey Company
SC Johnson
Kellogg
Google
Are a few that rank VERY HIGH in CSR. You ever see what kind of stuff Timberland does? They highly encourage their workers to do volunteer work and they help build better communities. |

So, then, looking at that article on Hershey's-
Pleas hellp, wrote the student, Tudor Ureche. He told them about the miserable situation in which Ive found myself cought since starting a job under the program in a plant packing Hersheys chocolates near the companys namesake town in Pennsylvania.
Students like Mr. Ureche, who had paid as much as $6,000 to take part in the program, expected a chance to see the best of this country, to make American friends and sightsee, with a summer job to help finance it all.
Instead, many students who were placed at the packing plant found themselves working grueling night shifts on speeding production lines, repeatedly lifting boxes weighing as much as 60 pounds and financially drained by low pay and unexpected extra costs for housing and transportation. Their complaints to the contractor running the program on behalf of the State Department were met with threats that they could be sent home.
Events this summer at the Hershey packing plant in Palmyra, Pa., revealed major holes in the State Departments oversight of its summer work and travel program, the largest and most ambitious of its cultural exchanges. The program, which placed 130,000 foreign students in all sorts of jobs across the country this year, has a large impact in shaping the countrys image for young generations overseas.
The Hershey students finally got the departments attention on Aug. 17 when 200 of them, waving placards and chanting union slogans, walked out of the plant
Well, too bad the word got out on them. At least the others have managed to keep their image intact. |

Op-Ed Cost Goldman Sachs $2.15 Billion Yesterday
Quote: |
Greg Smith's unflattering glimpse into Goldman Sachs' corrupt culture triggered a financial blow to the firm Wednesday, as the company lost $2.15 billion of its market value, making Smith's 1,283-word op-ed worth a whopping $1.675 million per word. |

REad for yourself:
For the last three years the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship and Reputation Institute have created a ranking of the top 50 companies in the United States that the public distinguishes for corporate social responsibility. See who holds the top 10 spots as esteemed by the American public and which industries did not make the cut.
Based on a survey of 7,790 consumers in the United States, the following companies rated highest in consumers perceptions of how an organization behaves towards all of its stakeholders, including its employees, other companies that it works or competes with, and the local and global community.

never ever for a moment believe that these multinational corporations care about the general good of the population, let alone their own employees. they have no allegiance to people, country, morality or code; their only concern is money and taking advantage of whomever and whatever they can to get it.
these companies hiring a few people for their marketing/pr team and doing some "good" things and painting a pretty picture for the public at large does not make them any less evil or destructive. |

I disagree that companies are evil or destructive.
There are "bad" companies out there. There are also "good" companies. To lump them all together is being evil and destructive is just plain ignorant. |

as i stated, i was referring to multinational corporations, not all generic companies.
if you'd like, i'd love for you to show me a "good" one. |
