Hi,
Here is another story or a boss from _ell. I started working there in May. I was not happy from the first day but things got worse. I was given an advance and told I could not have my passport back until I paid it back. Later in the month I gave notice and told my boss I would stay untill a new teacher was found. At the end of the month I paid back the advance money and asked for my passport but the director refused to give it to me. She said I had to pay the cost of my flight back before she would release my passport. I will pay it back with my last pay but I do want my passport NOW. I did not go to Japan for the E-2 Visa as I did not plan on staying. She said that I am working there illegal and that if I reported her I would be in trouble and that I would be deported.
Could some one please direct me to a link with info related to whether I can get in trouble if I report her.
Thanks, |

Sorry, no link for you. But my advice would be to call your embassy ASAP and explain to them what's going on. She has no right to hold your passport and perhaps a little heat from your embassy might be all that's required to get it back. Essentially she's holding you hostage, and that ain't right.
Hopefully someone else can address whether you could get yourself into trouble by reporting her.
Good luck. |

I don't think she can legally hold your passport. Demand it back or threaten a visit from the police or embassy officials... |

I believe the fine for your school is greater than the fine for you if you work illegally. I heard 10,000,000 won |

Yeah, they can't do that. Get it back by contacting your embassy, and get outta there. Any business that would do that to you is shady shady shady.
About the illegal work just stop it. Go Go Go. This situation is bad news. |

hmmm first of all NEVER NEVER NEVER GIVE UP YOUR PASSPORT EVER
Your passport is for you and you alone if anybody takes it from you contact your embassy immediately...they take this very seriously.
As for you working illegaly the school is in much more trouble than you will ever be....as they made you work before getting your E2 visa they will be the ones fined not you(claim ignorance) tell police they said that they would backdate it to the day you started.
Definately call the embassy though. |

It bugs me that passports aren't issued only after taking a test to know what to do when you lose or otherwise become separated from your passport. The passport is the property of the government ... YOUR government and it's illegal to be held or otherwise detained -- except of course in specific legal circumstances.
So, here I add my same comment. Call or go to your Embassy immediately and allow them to remedy the situation ... and they will. |

So the consensus of the posters in this thread seems pretty clear. Your first call should be to your embassy. If you do, please let us know what action the embassy takes, I'd like to know. Good luck to you. |

There should definitely be a test before issuing people passports lol. Shame on you for handing over your passport in the first place In case you haven't bothered reading the previous replies... call your Embassy. They definitely take this sort of thing very seriously and it should be very easy to get your passport back.
Stop giving them money too! Why would you? They've threatened you. Why would you take that crap and then give them money? Get your passport and leave. Don't be concerned about keeping them happy. Doesn't sound like they're even good for a release letter now. Keep your money and leave. |

This will be the only reason most embassies will intervene in a dispute between teachers and hogwans. It's illegal for them to hold your passport. Embassy! Embassy! Embassy! |

Well, the director told me she needed the passport for the visa application. I came over to Korea before this process was done because she said she needed someone right away. When I questioned her about the visa application and if it would be okay to work she said " Sure, many of our teachers have done that." In fact there is another woman that started there before me and her application was approved at the same time as mine. I did not go to Japan for the E-2 because by the time the application was approved and the flight date was set I already knew I could not be happy there so I don't think a Release Letter is necessary.
As for the money, after our major confrontation, she called the head office and told them to deposit my pay in the school account and not the one they had set up for me. She deducted the advance, a utilities deposit, and a small portion of the cost of the airfare and said the rest of the airfare would be deducted from my final pay.
Also, she has threatened to blacklist me and has told me that I will be in trouble with the law for working there illegally but when I spoke to her before coming over she said there was no problem.
She even had my Sky Plus cable disconnected.
Whew! My fingers are tired.
Yes, I will call the embassy.
Thanks a bunch all,
amor |
