|
|
I figured I would make a shout out after reading some of the previous posts. I was wondering if there were any othe teachers living in these areas. I live in the town of Goseong, and as far as I know, I'm the only western resident here. I have met a few nice filipina ladies here who are married to Koreans, but that's it. As others have said...it gets quite boring and one could easily feel very isolated in such a small town. I do have sky life satellite tv, but it's still a running joke with my boss and K co-workers that my notebook computer is my best friend. (and there is truth in that statement)
I have one adult class that meets twice a week...and have made friends with a couple of guys in it, but the lack of regular English conversations is really missed. After spending two years in Gyeonggi-do, in Pyongchon and Anyang, this has been like night and day in comparison.
Maybe there are others out there who are in the same situation. If so, let's get in touch.

hey aldershot, I've heard good things about Goeje...but haven't been there myself. There seems to be a lot of swimming beaches around there..yes/no? I know what you mean about the E-mart and Lotte mart. Whenever I see them, I somehow feel as if I'm back in civilization again.
btw, how is the ESL teacher population over where you are? I'm sure there are tons of other nationalities working in/around the shipyards.
Let's meet up sometime. How often do you head over to Tongyeong for your shopping sprees? |

hey dam, yeah, goeje's fine. a lovely place for snorkling, swimming, many beaches. and the foreigner population is large (due to the shipyards) but i shy away from them because they tend not to like or do anything korean. very few english teachers in my town.
so yeah, let's meet up. we should try to find other dave's people in the area and make a night of it. |

Hey,
I've just arrived on Geoje. Still not sure exactly where I am - something like 'Gohyruni' I think.
I'd be up for some sort of meet up - would be good to get to know some people.
Whereabouts on Geoje are you? |

Let's do the Okpo stagger
I was planning on having a few beers with Vexed on the weekend of the 27th. There's LOTS of bars in Okpo, the town on the east side of Geoje.
and BTW, there is a HomePlus in Gohyeon now. you don't have to go to Tongyeong. |

I invented that. And you stole my job, or did I give it to you? I forget which. Almost a year away from Geoje seems like forever. Almost want to move back. Settlin' for visits, four in all last summer/fall.
I go to Tongyeong at least once a month these days as it's a hop skip and jump from the Jinju area.
You are all invited to my country abode on a weekend. It's about an hour or so away. I just had two waygooks visit, and crash at my place this weekend, from Jinju and from Gumi. Small towns don't seem so small when you've got people visiting. |

Met a group of teacher when I was heading through Tongyong. Seemed like a tight group 'cause there wasn't very many of them. They pretty much know all the foreign teachers which was why they stopped us when they saw us, new faces. |

Yeah 27th should be good!
Anyone know where I can get a map of Geoje? I need to get my bearings - I've got a general generic idea where I am.. somewhere near the centre (I think). I've ventured out to look at the town, but can't work out what the hangul is for 'map'. |

Hundreds of Europeans, Aussies and other waygooks await you in Okpo at the foreigner's club. Go to the Admiral Hotel (everyone there knows the place, supercheap cab ride from anywhere in Okpo) supermarket and the club is upstairs on the second floor. There's a decent illegal imports store on the first floor, look through the glass door next to the video shop, lots of stuff to shop while you're there, I get $50-100 worth loaded up when I go. |

Howdy Staggerers
the Singing Chicken is the ideal launching pad for most local expeditions
- friendly English speakers (not too much shipping news included)
- not requisite to buy the ubiquitous, female, drinking escort expensive rounds all night (ala many other foreign bars in town)
- no membership required ..
- Hana will let you choose the music and keep you entertained royally
and
it's just around the corner from Quizno's for that well earned stamina snack to keep you jiggling for the rest of the night |

yes, it was in fact your choice to leave this lovely town. what were you thinking? And i believe the proper credit for the okpo stagger goes tooooo...... the DSME workers They've surely been here longer and they've got the stagger working any night of the week by, what, 7 or 8 o'clock? and by the way, you now have to be a member in order to buy drinks at the foreigners club.
weninlome -- singing chicken sounds good. i'm sold.
let's go this saturday everyone -- and maybe we can all have some dinner together, too? what do you say? |
