Has anyone lived in the Dongducheon / Yeoncheon area. I've heard that Dongducheon is pretty polluted. Apparently Yeoncheon is in the countryside outside Dongducheon, but only about fifteen minutes by bus. I'm wondering what its like. Is it just as polluted, or is it livable there? I'd appreciate hearing any experiences.
Thanks in advance. |

I live over the mountains from Dongducheon but have never lived there before.
Dongducheon is connected to Seoul via Line #1, but it is pretty far north.
It has a military base so you can get foreign goods on the grey market.
The military base will also probably mean that the social establishments will be crawling with soldiers (if thats a problem for you).
In Korea "polluted" is relative though. |

A friend of mine who was born in Iran but got naturalized as a Korean citizen used to live there. He detested it because basically it's a blue-collar hicktown.
I'd avoid it because it's so far from Seoul in addition to what my friend said. |

It'a actually not so far from northern Seoul. From Dobongsan its only half an hour. My concern is with the pollution. Is Yeoncheon as bad as I hear Dongducheon is?
But yes, from what I've heard it's pretty blue collar. |

My friend says he couldn't stand the people in Dongducheon and he's glad he got out of there.
Dude, find another gig. You can do better. |

Anyone in Yeoncheon at all? I'd be interested to know where foreign teachers meet up in that area.
Thanks.

I know that area very well.
I doubt that you will even find another foreigner around.(EFL teacher)
There are basically two towns in Yeoncheon.
One is Chongok , and the other is Yeoncheon.
Chongok is the larger of the two. About a twenty minute bus ride north from Dongducheon.
Yeoncheon proper is further north still. A very small town .
Maybe 2 or 3 blocks long with one stop light.(seriously) Hint~ ISOLATION
If you were to live there , I'd imagine you would be going down to Dongducheon as often as possible.
In Dongducheon there is a large U.S. Army base.
You can find many foreign products there. As well as other foreigner
Although mostly soldiers.
From Dongducheon you can take a train to Seoul , about 30~40 minute ride. |

I'll be moving to Dongducheon in April. It looks kind of iffy but my job seems "nice". I'll have more to say after I start, lol. I'll be looking for friends in the area but the one upside for me is that my boyfriend is stationed there |

Yes, a few of us are in Jeongok-ri, Yeoncheon-gun and further afield. We meet up occasionally.
Personally I prefer both towns to Dongducheon - quieter, cleaner, less foreigners - although I often visit Dongducheon for good eats and Uijeongbu for shopping. |
