Hi guys, my sister got an offer to work for the summer intensive at the Princeton Review Korea at their Apgujeong office last week. She's excited at the opportunity to go and teach there for the summer but after going over some of the details of the arrangement I am just concerned as the older brother.
a) apparently the teachers are housed in dormitories with a roommate. is this normal? It's not so much a safety concern, but from all of my friends who have taught in Korea, Japan, and China, none of them had to live with a roommate... and I'm not sure how I feel about my sister living in a dormitory with other male instructors.
b) hours. they seemed to avoid the subject of having a real schedule at a fixed rate. I read hagwon stories that there are "proctor" hours that come out to be $5/6 an hour in comparison to the regular teaching rate, and that you're stuck doing some of this every week.
My sister is kind of naive and has never really lived on her own for prolonged periods of time, which is why I'm hoping to help her reach an informed decision (she asked me to check over the contract).
Please feel free to PM me any stories, experiences, or feedback!
Thank you! |

a) GENERALLY speaking, teachers are given single apartments. However, shared dormitories are common for TPR. Korea is a pretty conservative society, especially in regards to gender. I *highly* doubt she will be on the same floor as male teachers.
b) The best way to get an answer for this question is to contact the school and ask them yourself! If you you get an answer, please share it on this thread, I'm curious as well.
Good luck to your sister! |

I've never worked for a Hagwon or one that runs a summer intensive program, but there are a few things you need to know:
1. Intensive programs are just that...intensive. Meaning they will work your sister from dusk to dawn. She better be prepared for that.
2. Because they only need her for a period of 1-3 months, they will not provide her with housing. IF SO, they will try to save as much money as possible hence the dormitory-style room with a roomie. This is ridiculous IMO, but I'm 99.99% sure they won't room her with a guy.
3. Read between the lines of the contract if she has it in hand. If there's anything you feel iffy about, contact the employer. Never hurts. |
