But basic questions.
I want something small, light, and manageable for dummies. I have my eye on the six inch Kindle at Amazon, but apparently they won't ship it to Korea.
So I may have them ship it to my brother, who can then ship it to me. But first, will the Wifi work in Korea? And just how easy is it to get books? Are they abundant to be downloaded, preferably for free? Or at least for cheap, provided the Wifi works??

Wi-Fi works.
There are torrents with tens of thousand of books you can download for free. Just use the USB cable and transfer them from your computer. It is easy with the free program Calibre. |

How will they know if it's under $150? Should I leave the receipt in the package?
And why is it a good idea to remove it from its original package (as another poster advised)? |

If you leave it in the original package, you're more likely to be charged an import tariff because the item is 'new.' If it's not in an original package, it's 'used.' That's my understanding of how it works.
Also, they'll know whether it's over/under $150 because you have to declare the value of the item in the box when you mail something internationally. |

So if you bought the Kindle for $90. Then shipping is another $20. The total is $110 and still under the $150 limit. |

Wifi works anywhere in the world where there is a wireless network. If you have a wireless router at home or work, or if you go to a coffee shop or something that provides wifi, your Kindle can get online there. There just has to be a wireless network nearby you can connect to. The country you are in makes no difference; it's the same as the fact that you can get online with any laptop in any country with an ethernet cable--as long as you have internet service.
3G lets you get online (almost) anywhere without having to be near a wifi "hotspot." 3G coverage depends on the network provider, but I don't know what network Kindle uses and whether it is available in Korea. |

this is correct. The limit is including the shipping with the item's price. |

First off. You do not really need the 3G here in Korea.
I have ordered the Kindle Keyboard version a year ago from Amazon. No problems. Got broke and they replaced as under warrenty, all from Korea!
Just checked Amazon site now and both the Kindle 6' and the Kindle touch will be shipped to South Korea.
Still question which Korea did you choose? Republic of Korea or The Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Do you know the difference? The one with Democratic is the bad one, ery few companies will ship there.
Plus which Amazon are you using? UK, Canada, plain old US .com? Looking the UK has no option to change. Canada allows you to change too. Why not just use the good old amazon.com
Is it a credit card issue? I used my Korean Visa no problem.
I am even pretty certain even if you do get the Kindle with 3G and price is over 150k won you can still get it. Just expect to pay some customs duties. Still avoid the hassle and get the WiFi only.
The only major restriction from Amazon is some book will be blocked in Asia (publishing rights and that). Access to some magazines and newspapers will be limited. Plus APPS are still a no go?
As to book. Buying no problem sometimes a touch more. Free. well learn how to pirate them. Use bittorent and pirate bay. Never mind the free and legal ebook places like Gutenberg. If you are capable with computers and can move files around. connect cables, solve minor problems, you can do a whole lot more with the Kindle. More so with Calibre program. |
