|
|
SMOE has 2 starting dates - March (Spring) or Aug (Fall). Has anyone applied to one semester, and was then asked to start a month into the earlier semester? For example, if you applied for an Aug. 2012 start date and then were asked to start in April 2012?
For those who have had this experience, could you please share about it?
- Why was there an early start date in the first place? Does this mean the previous teacher didn't like the school/location and quit after a month?
- Did you like your school / location?
- Did you have to sign a contract that was longer than a year?
- Any other advice you'd give someone in the same situation?
Thanks in advance for sharing. |

Contracts are always 1 year.
There are many possible reasons for a mid-semester start date. A teacher 1, 2 or 3 years ago may have had a mid-semester start, and as such every subsequent contract has finished mid-semester, or SMOE miscalculated the number of teachers, or someone quit (for a variety of reasons)....far too many to speculate on.
School/Location - can vary.

Hi Otherside,
Thanks for your response! Contracts are not always one year, because the one I'm being offered will last for 16 months. They want me to work until Aug. 2013 so I finish at the same time as everyone else. If this is the case, then I don't see why they didn't make earlier mid-semester start teachers finish with the other teachers (like they are telling me I have to do).
It just seems like the odds are against me and that most of the mid-semester positions happened because of "runners." |

They are obviously trying to solve this problem then
A few years ago in GEPIK, they put a hiring freeze on mid-semester starts to try and solve this problem there, but that didn't go down to well as some schools were without a teacher for 3-4 months.
If you take a 16 month contract, make sure that your vacation will pro-rated for the additional 4 months. You will also receive a higher severance bonus (1.3 x your monthly salary). |

Good point. It's always disconcerting when you are the guinea pig. |

The E-2 visa though is usually only good for 13 months though (although I've heard of people getting 2 year ones). So if your visa finished before your contract...you'll need a trip to Immigration to extend it. |
