I've managed to find the majority of things on my own, but one thing I can't find is a knife block. My director went out and bought me a ton on kitchen utensils except for a knife block so I cant chop any of the veg/meat I've bought :S

I was at yongsan yesterday and bought a computer (thanks ttompatz for the recommendation) and found a knife block but didnt think I could carry it AND the computer home. I dont really want to make the hour long train journey just for a block of knives. Can anyone recommend somewhere closer?

Or even explain how to say it in Korean so that I can ask for a knife block (or even just one knife!) in shops? I don't have a problem with going in to all the shops in my area and asking for a knife (even if it does sound a little odd) but I would rather know the word in korean than say it in english and make weird hacking gestures....

Korean for chopping block is DoMa (도마).
Small size ones should be easy to find, like at a mart. Ones big as your own torso, not so easy.
Cooking knife is SikKal (식칼) but I suggest you go with the culture and cook with scissors.

E-Mart.

Wolgyedong? Go to the E-Mart just north of Seongbuk Station (line 1), on the East side of the tracks. They'll have what you need. Just cruise the aisles and you'll find plenty of knives and a block, if you're so inclined - I just have a single big knife that does the trick for me. Tiny kitchen, so I try and keep it simple.

Find a Daiso - they have everything you need and cheap. The big knives there are just 5,000 won and my husband, who is a chef, says they are actually pretty good.

Now that you say that, technically, I think my knife is from the Daiso inside one of the big marts, and not the actual mart itself...

OP, daiso.co.kr to find locations. Since I assume you can't read Korean, I searched for you and found there is a Daiso at Seongbuk Station. The ones inside of stations aren't always the most well stocked, but it's worth a shot.

Others might be closer, but again, you seem green finding a place near a station is generally the easiest way. I think there are a couple of ones that are closer to Wolgye dong specifically, so ask a friend if you're so inclined.

There's a Daiso shop in Line 1 Seongbuk station, in 'Save-Zone' shopping mall next to Line 7 Hagye station, another near Line 7 Gongneung station. Line 7 runs parallel to the Jungrang steam on the other side from Wolgye-dong.

While we are on the subject, does anyone know where to find Victorinox kitchen knives or other knives with good quality? I found some victorinox steak knives when I first got here and bought a couple, but now it seems like they have all been replaced by other brands.

I have never heard of Daiso before, are they good knives?

I bought myself a Shun santoku a few years back. Pricey, but I hate using anything else now.
