Internet monitoring in Canada? Forever NO!

The conservative Harper government is the traitor of Canadian citizens!

Quote:
Public outrage at the government's proposed Internet surveillance laws boiled over Thursday, as thousands of Canadians slammed the bill on the Twitterverse.

And Liberal MP Sean Casey turned the tables on Public Safety Minister Vic Toews and Justice Minister Rob Nicholson, requesting that Parliament divulge the web surfing histories from their computers and BlackBerrys.

Casey says he's trying to make a point about the Harper government's contentious online surveillance law with his order paper question.

"I very much want the minister to have a taste of his own medicine," Casey said. "To have happen to him what he proposes to do to ordinary Canadians."

Bill C-30, the Protecting Children from Internet Predators Act, would give police much broader powers to snoop on the online communications of Canadians. It has been met with fierce opposition from Internet privacy and civil-rights groups, who say the bill would build a state surveillance system into Canada's Internet.

Public anger crystallized on Twitter Thursday, becoming the most tweeted-about subject in Canada.

The hashtag #TellVicEverything became the focal point for a mass popular protest.

Thousands of Canadians flooded Toews with routine, often inane, updates on their lives, which is the kind of information many fear police could access if the Internet surveillance bill passes.

"Hey ToewsVic, I lost an email from my work account yester-day," wrote B.C. Twitter user Kevin Harding. "Can I get your copy?"

Others pilloried Toews' over-the-top rhetoric that those who oppose the bill are in bed with child pornographers.

"Hey, everybody! You either #TellVicEverything or you side with the child pornographers," wrote another Twitter user.

Casey's question requests a log of all "websites accessed on the personal departmental desktop computers, laptop computers, mobile phones, tablet computers or other Internet-enabled devices" used by Toews, Nicholson and their political staffers.

Casey said he could not predict what sorts of sites the ministers have been surfing, but expects they likely would be embarrassed if the information were on public display.

"I want him to be personally aware of what it's like to have someone combing through your browser histories," he said.

Casey said he expects the ministers to withhold the information he requested. "I fully expect this will display a double standard . . . somehow they are entitled to not disclose the information I'm seeking, while on the other hand expecting that ordinary Canadians have no similar rights."

University of Ottawa expert Michael Geist said Toews can only blame himself for setting off the "firestorm" in the Twittersphere.

"Its hard to believe the rollout of this bill could have gone any worse for the government," he said.

I have trouble getting up any kind of fervour anymore over imminent-loss-of-all-that's-good-about-the-Internet crises that have been popping up regularly for the past ten years.
