I taught at a "Hogwan from Hell" in Korea in 2008 and didn't complete my contract. I couldn't get another job in Korea at that time because I was contractually "hogtied" to the Hogwan, so I left the country. Now I'm interested in returning to Korea to teach at a public school. Do you think it would be possible to get another Korean work visa? Also, would I have to mention my previous negative Hogwan experience and the fact that I had a Korean work visa in 2008? |

I think that we can safely say that the're more to Stew's story that he's letting on.
Still, you're best bet is to just tell the recruiters that your former school was treating you badly. But make sure that you don't put too much drama into it. Just state the facts and say that you moved on. If you otherwise look good on paper and have a nice photo, they'll try to place you somewhere. The recruiters get paid for placing teachers. If they don't place you somewhere, they lose out on a commission that they know another recruiter will get.
Some people in your situation just say that the school was going out of business so the teachers were let go. When asked for a contact at the old school they make up something. They worked for English World Language School, run by Mrs Julia Kim. Let's be honest, most hogwons don't last that long anyway so it's no surprise when they can't seem to make contact with Mrs Kim. Without their former boss to give them a bad reference, the recruiter only has the teacher's story to go by. |
