I was just talking with a friend about Korea. She has a masters in a main school subject and is thinking of taking a teacher's certification program-while -you-teach in the US and I told her that she might be able to apply for an international school job in Korea.

If you have a masters in one of the main school subjects, plus a TESL or TEFL and some teaching experience, are there particular markets that you should be applying to if you're looking at the Korean market? She's also looking at markets elsewhere. I told her "don't do inner city certification program unless you have training in dealing with high-needs kids and a whole lot of practice in classroom management or you'll just burn out." With consolidations and corporations taking over the management of public schools in the US I suggested that she could just wind up getting screwed with a bad assessment and a year experience she couldn't put on a resume. So I encouraged her to add Korea to her list of possible international places.

Can anyone help with some current info on whether she could get a good job in Korea?

If she's certified, she can apply to Korea International School, Seoul Foreign School, and Seoul International School. The first has the most resources and is on the rise, the second is the most "non-Korean," and the third is the most academically successful (including college admissions).

But those places are pretty strict about certification, so I think she's SOL unless she has it. An MA will get her more pay, but without the cert they won't even consider her, unless things have changed in the last few years...

Certified and experienced = Don't just look at Korea.

http://www.tes.co.uk/jobs
http://www.ibo.org
NET program in Hong Kong ($40k + benefits)
Government / public school jobs in Taiwan ($36k+benefits)
Top tier international schools in Thailand pay in the $40k-$50k range)

etc.

There are decent jobs in the international school market (globally) but not every school with "international" in their name is really an international school.
Due diligence (on the part of the teacher) is required.
