I have a lot of downloaded movies, TV shows, documentaries, etc. on my hard drive (C drive) that won't delete. Until recently I could just watch something and then delete it, but now many downloads will not delete.

Most of the time when I try to delete a video file I get a message which reads: Cannot delete (name of file I am trying to delete): Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full and that the file is not currently in use.

Anybody know what is causing this? By the way, my C drive is almost full (because of all the files that have accumulated on it). How can I solve this problem. Thumb drives and an external hard drive work fine and I am able to delete files from them. It is only the C drive that has the problem....

IF you downloaded the file with a bit torrent client, it's likely that you are currently seeding the file for other users (they are downloading from you), meaning that the file is 'in use' and unable to be deleted. If this is the case, open your bit torrent client (uTorrent etc.) and delete the file from there first.

Try what he said again, but after a reboot. Sometimes, trackers take a bit of time to update as well, so you could, technically, still be seeding the d/l.

I've had the same problem periodically. Sometimes deleting within a command prompt works.

Ever used DOS?

Open up a command prompt. In XP it's in start->programs->accessories

Navigate to the directory where the files are that you want to delete. To change directories use cd *insertdirectorylocationherenoasteriks*

Example:

cd c:\movies

Then type:

del filename.avi

Anytime in command prompt that you need help with a command, type help commandname

Example

help del

Gets you:

Quote:
Deletes one or more files.

DEL [/P] [/F] [/S] [/Q] [/A[[:]attributes]] names
ERASE [/P] [/F] [/S] [/Q] [/A[[:]attributes]] names

names Specifies a list of one or more files or directories.
Wildcards may be used to delete multiple files. If a
directory is specified, all files within the directory
will be deleted.

/P Prompts for confirmation before deleting each file.
/F Force deleting of read-only files.
/S Delete specified files from all subdirectories.
/Q Quiet mode, do not ask if ok to delete on global wildcard
/A Selects files to delete based on attributes
attributes R Read-only files S System files
H Hidden files A Files ready for archiving
- Prefix meaning not

If Command Extensions are enabled DEL and ERASE change as follows:

The display semantics of the /S switch are reversed in that it shows
you only the files that are deleted, not the ones it could not find.

I'm feeling old now.

Have you checked for other programs using the file.

So if you download using a torrent and still seeding.

Watched with a a video program. Sometimes even if the video is added to a playlist and is done and over with. The program may still decide to lock it.

Are you sharing the file some way. Some P2P programs will also prevent deleting because you are sharing it.

Do you use different accounts. Like you log into Administrator/Root account one time then change over to another one for other work. You may not have permisson to delete. Ie Downloaded video on admin account but use different account like guest to delete.

VLC (or maybe Zoom, I wish they'd make a universally useful video player) is guilty of this. (Neither actively show their playlists. VLC might have stuff you watched months ago on it if you don't occasionally clear it.) At least it was on my machine. Nearly drove me crazy. I feel like when I'm told I can't delete something, it's an affront to my freedom or something.

well, I have now learned that it is not only the hard drive that has the problem, but also the external hard drive; again, a few things will delete (as always), but many downloads (from a variety of different sites) simply won't delete......

Sometimes you need to cut the power to your external drive and turn it back on to delete files from that. When you turn off your computer, leave it off for several minutes, making sure it's not connected to the mains, to remove capacitance. Check internet forums if all else fails, making sure to specify your processor, motherboard type etc. or brand and model number in the case of laptops or off the shelf desktops.

u may want to check what thatkidpercy and i said again. sometimes the simplest sol'n is the best.

for example, if ur using utorrent, go to options, preferences, general, and untick "start utorrent when windows starts". then right-click on the problem file(s) and select "remove", and restart. should work.
