Before you read this, keep in mind that I am a HUGE city person and just the thought of being in a rural, desolate area makes me feel creeped out.
I just got here. It's my second year in Korea and I'm teaching at a middle school in Bucheon. I feel really lucky that I got a public school job so close to Seoul. I thought I was lucky that I was further East, which meant closer to Seoul. But now I'm wishing that my apartment was located near Bucheon station. I'm living in Bumbaek-dong, Sosa-gu and the place is SO dead. I really shouldn't complain because my apartment is free and completely brand new, but there's not even a Family Mart around here! I am barely bothered by this but I didn't think that a place so close to Seoul could be so dead. It's just the dong I'm living in, because if I get on a bus I'm in civilization after one or two bus stops.
I wish there was a way to move apartments. I'd rather live by Bucheon station and just commute. I probably should have requested that before I got here. I am just a little bit concerned that there are no taxis or anything around here... what if I have to go somewhere in the middle of the night? What if I really need something to drink or eat at night or something? I haven't really explored the full area so maybe there are things around here that I'm just not aware of. I did see a KB bank and some other things in the taxi ride over here from the airport. Perhaps I just have to explore a bit more. I used to live right off the main street across from Guri station and I loved all the life that was going on there.
My boyfriend is arriving today and will be living in Gwangmyeong, so maybe I'll just live with him and commute to work every day if he lives in an urban area.
I know I will probably get flamed for this post. Like I said, I'm not really complaining, I'm more concerned that I won't be able to find a taxi at night or get a drink if I'm really thirsty... basic stuff like that.
Is anyone familiar with this area? Maybe you can help show me around. I tried walking around today but how quiet and dead it was kind of freaked me out so I just went to the bus stop and went to Bucheon station. |

Are you near Sosa station? You should be able to walk to Bucheon station in about 10 minutes. There are a lot of buses that run through the general area, but I have no idea what street you're on. As for taxis...they stick to the main roads. I know there are several large streets that run through the Sosa area (I used to live in Yeokgok so would constantly pass through Sosa on my way to Bucheon Station area or to the Hyundai Department Store area).
I'd be surprised if there's not some kind of convenience store within 5 minutes walk but maybe you've been unlucky. Sosa is a pretty quiet area but it's only a 10~15 minute bus ride to the Hyundai Department Store area which has a couple of foreign bars and loads of restaurants. Hopefully once you find your way about you'll be alright. Bucheon is a pretty good city to be in, when you know where to go. I lived in Yeokgok for two and a half years and loved it. Yeokgok isn't big city either but it's only a short bus ride to the type of stuff you're looking for.
I'd say once you know how to get about the area you'll grow to like Bucheon. |

I'm like a 10 minute bus ride to Sosa station. I haven't taken the bus to Yeokgok yet so I'm not sure how far away that is, but I'm guessing around the same distance. I live across the street from Boembak-dong Go-dung Hagkyo (I think that's it?)
I found that there is a Family Mart and some other stuff near me, maybe a 5 minutes walk. I just didn't go the right direction yesterday. I took a cab to my school this morning (co-teacher did not pick me up as planned, haha) and I saw some stuff on the way. I now know where civilization starts. It's just that the specific street I'm on is totally dead. I know once I know my way around I'll be fine. |

Pretty sure I'm moving to that part of Bucheon in a few weeks!
Near to Songnae Station.
Seems to be lots of people here in Bucheon! |

It passes all international safety standards - yes I drink it, but saying that where I live I could prob drink the stream water direct no probs.......
BUT Seoul water is safe to drink, assuming you dont live in an old apt with rusting pipes! |

You're not as isolated as you think. It just seems that way when you aren't familiar with the area. I've only been around Sosa Station a couple times, so don't know it really well. But you are between Yeokgok and Bucheon Station.
You can take Bus 5 heading west to get to Bucheon and farther west to Jung-dong. It's a green bus. Stops fairly close to Sosa Station (about a block north of the station). Make sure your heading west from where you are. Ask the bus driver if he goes to E-mart (in Jung-dong...as there's also an E-mart in Bucheon Station). Out that way, there's a Hyundae Department Store, more things to do at night, etc.
You're also not that far from Seoul. You can take the regular train from Sosa or take an express train from Bucheon or Yeokgok (terminal station will be Yongsan for the express train, or something like Soyosan for the regular train).
When you come back from Seoul, make sure (this is line 1, the dark blue line), make sure the terminal station is Incheon (regular train back to Sosa) or Dongincheon (express train back to Yeokgok or Bucheon Station).
Taxis are going to be pretty much at every station, even Sosa. But buses and trains run until, around midnight.

I know where that is. You're in the boondocks.
You do have a couple of things going for you though:
If you like to jog you're in a nice area with big streets and not enough people to make you regret having started running.
You're pretty close to a not-so-busy HomePlus - it may be 24 hours.
You're a cheap taxi ride from OnSu Station, which is where I usually come (on the 7 line) to when returning from Seoul. You don't have to endure the maniac trains, and if you're coming from southern Seoul, it's actually fast.
If anything, you can PM me if you need more info.
Oh.. if you're a walker, the market by YeokGohk is cheaper than by the main road. |

I've since adjusted to life here and figured out how to get everywhere. It's not so bad at all. I'm only a 5 minute bus ride or a 2,500 won taxi ride to Yeokgok. And my boondocks neighborhood is actually growing on me, haha.

Hi,
I don't live in the area anymore as I moved back in to the city and commute every day, but I have been working there for over 5 years now and know the area fairly well I feel. If you want any advice on places to go or where to get things from and you want to meet for a walk around to scan the place then let me know.
I teach just by ChangYeong Elementary school which is right by Beombak-dong and I'm there every day from 10am till 9pm, so just hit me up with a message and I can take some time out whenever suits you. My name is Martin and my number is 010-2238-7252.
Not the most happening place, but Bucheon is a lovely area for sure.
