|
|
Have just started a new job and my co-worker keeps threatening to get me fired. She is doing some really dubious things and when I mention them to her she keep threatening to go to the boss, suggesting that he will fire me.
She was waiting for me by the crossing 'by chance' and said hello how are you. And after having her mess with my head all day I really didn't want to talk to her. Some of my students had quit, some because of their treatement by the school or of probems already, but some were clearly unhappy with some of the ethics of the school. I said I didn't want to talk to her but she said she wanted to talk to me about something. I ended up shouting at her because she flirts with my male students and asks them to give up to her or help her find a boyfriend or whatever, sometimes she asks them to help her find out information about me, which she can use against me. It is ruining my classes. They have come into class really tired and with their heads really messed up.
Some of the students have left and the others seem really miserable. She said that was a serious acusation ' and you know what, I'm going to take this up with Sean, because that is a really serious accuation.' I asked her if she could just act professionally but she didn't seem to know what that meant.
It was pretty horrible and has left me really het up. I don't really want a disciplinary because of a silly little person. |

Sounds like you work with a crazy person. Better go to your boss about it before she does or else you'll just look like you're lying out of your backside to cover yourself. |

I agree. Go to the boss to complain. Key point though is not to be dramatic about it. Then YOU look like the crazy person.
If the boss won't deal with it, or if your co-worker DOES convince him to fire you, then so what? You find another job. Personally, if a co-worker was seriously bothering me and the boss didn't want to deal with it then I'd probably quit.
It sounds like you're working at a hogwon. Most hogwons jobs are only a step above working at a Burger King or a call center. Would you stick around at one of THOSE jobs if someone was giving you grief? |

Ok, enough with the hogwan bashing. How is it a step up from Burger King or a call center when most people who choose to work at hogwans make considerably more money then people who choose to work at public schools? |

My thoughts exactly!
What do you consider "considerably low"? I make more than most of the hagwon teachers I've meet and I work in a PS |

True!
Well over 50% of wealth in America/Canada and nearly 75% of all wealth in the United Kingdom does not come from work (interest, property investments and inheritance). That's where the real money is.
And if you take out CEO's pay I would venture to say that the figure is more like 90%.

I agree with talking to the principle or owner... if you can get some of the other coworkers on your side, then you'll really have a better shot at getting some action. That said, I've worked with incompetent people, lazy people, liars, and perverts and none of them ever got fired, no matter who complained... might want to look for another job.... |

I wasn't referring to the salary. ELT jobs in Korea definitely pay way more than BK or call centers. I was referring more to the work environment. Sure there are good hogwons out there. I've also worked at some great hogwons. If I had to hazard a guess though, I'd say that a good portion of hogwons are NOT well run in terms of profitability and/or are being run without regard for the quality of their services.
I've also met many a hogwon owner who said to me, "Trog, I'm going to hire a foreign teacher. It will attract more students. Mothers prefer to send their children to an academy with a foreign teacher." Basically they want a walking advertisement. Some of them don't even plan on making a long term profit from the school. The owners who open a school without a background in teaching, are just doing it because they figure there's a bit of money to be made in a certain neighborhood. They'll run the school for 2-4 years until it stops turning a sufficient profit and then they close it down and open another business. |

It seems like I hear more stories of crazy coworkers from public schools, not hagwons. Public school teachers are the ones who have to deal with co-teachers, after all. When I hear about problems with hagwons, it is always the unscrupulous management, not the coworkers.
What I'm saying is that if you hadn't mentioned that many of your students have dropped out, I would have said that it sounds like you work at a public school.
By the way, just out of curiousity, is English your first language? |

That's because management trumps co-teachers. It's like second hand smoke, you think it isn't bad for you but it is.
I had better co-teachers at public schools than the private/hagwon ones. |
