and I don't mean the ones that are tanked. i swear, every time I'm marching down the street and I see someone approaching me, before I know it they are walking directly at me. Or if I'm trying to get around someone, I half to jig like a running back since they are zig zagging their way down the sidewalk. This is even more annoying than the students who lock arms and create the "wall of not going anywhere in particular at a speed I could crawl faster than".
there, I feel better....just getting that off my chest |

Strategy: go blithely on your way and pay them no heed. They know you're there and they also know whether you are aware of them. If they think you aren't they get out of your way. They do all this without even looking at you. Remarkable. Don't look at them.
Why don't the scooter/moped guys ever honk when they sneak up behind you on the sidewalk? |

I know its the funniest thing. makes me crazy sometimes.
but now I accept it.. when I get off the train I always walk wide becuase I know the person next to me cant walk straight. or when im on the sidewalk and I want to pass someone I just get on the road and overtake.
in the supermarket. im dodging people like im dodging bullets in IRAQ.
I hate it when they leave there trolly right there in the middle isle. damn that pisses me off.. you know what I do now? hahhahahaa
I just hit it with my trolly and drag it like 5 meters.. hahahahah
then the korean looks at me like im crazy..hahahahah ME?hahahha
sorry buddy!! whats wrong with this picture!!! AJUMA how long you been shopping>??? if you havent learned supermarket rules yet. then dont expect me to teach you.. hahhha.. I dont even bother opening my mouth and saying excuse me anymore.. IM tired off the same thing EVERY week!
the walking in a straight line thing is funny.. ohh are you driving by any chance? maaannnn.. they drive pretty much like that too.. they dont even use blinkers. they just cut right in front of you.. or they dont give way when turning into main road. so they pretty ram into you... and of course they go into the first turning lane.. they take the second lane which I happen to be cruising down the road 60. so I have to slam the breaks cuz that person cant drive!!! hahahahha
now I pretty much anticipate everymove koreans make..
on the sidewalk.. on the roads.. in the shopping centers,

Scooters on the sidewalks? It is illegal to drive on the sidewalks but cops don't care.
I have done this on a few occasions and still do, especially if a scooter comes up behind me and beeps his horn. I push them off the bike. A buddy of mine is not so gentle, he shoves them off the bike. What's even more stupid is when foreigners drive their scooters on the sidewalk!
No brains! |

Yea, I think I'm gonna go back home and start pushing people off of their bicycles when they ride on the sidewalks...you know...since it's illegal and all... |

Even worse when they carry umbrellas. Need to wear eye protection. |

According to Olympic judges, they can't skate in a straight line either.

When I first arrived in Korea I had trouble getting anywhere as I ducked and dodged and waited for an opening. After being bumbed into, walked on and otherwise ignored I decided that when in Rome do as the Romans do. Walk in a straight line if someone doesnt see you well....they should be watching where they are going too.
Dont be a schmuck about it but just walk steadily in a straight line.
Last week I had the misfortune of getting off the bus in Gangnam at about 7pm with my mother, two suitcases a backpack and a couple of other bags. My Mom having a bad back wasnt carrying anything. As I headed down the sidewalk I started my litany of oops, sorry, pardon me, get the hell out of the way, freight train coming through and basically plowed a way through the sidewalk. Suitcases slamming, bouncing and careening off of people....it was pretty impressive...almost like Moses parting the Red sea. The crowd gave way before the immense Canadian.
I kind of felt bad for all the dings and dents I put into people but for the most part the only ones who got slammed pretty good were the groups that decided to have chats in the middle of the sidewalk.....you know the ones 5 or 6 people who need to chat and block traffic. |
