I have a good friend who will graduate University this spring and she is deciding whether to go to Teacher's college in Canada for a year or teach abroad first for some experience. What would you recommend doing first? Is it better to get teachers college out of the way, or see if teaching is definitely for you and try teaching abroad first?
Pros/Cons of both? What would you do? |

I would say getting certification BEFORE teaching abroad is the smarter play.
Why?
Proper certification opens up all sorts of doors abroad. For example it gives you access to some of the better International School positions in various countries.
Those positions tend to pay better and offer better conditions. |

Getting into Teacher's College in Canada is unbelievably hard without relevant experience. Also, most schools are adopting a 2-year format starting in 2013, making it fairly tedious.
If you ask me, go to Korea for a year and pay off some bills while you get a taste for teaching. If you don't like it, at least you won't have blown $20,000 and two years. |

| I say certification first. Get it out of the way. I wish I had done that before coming overseas. Now I'm doing it at 33. Would have been making more money and had more options all this time if I had done it before leaving Canada back in the day. |

I guess the question is...has she been accepted to Teacher's college already?
If she has...or if she is fairly certain she will, then apply and get in now...don't delay the degree.
If her app is denied...then go abroad and get the experience.
But definitely go as soon as she gets accepted. |

Fair enough.
Getting admitted to TC in Ontario is competitive for example but with solid grades and references it is not impossible.
The point on finding out if you like teaching before applying for TC is also quite valid.
I was talking mostly for people who actually want to teach as a career and know it already. If you are unsure, by all means teach abroad or in a ESL school where you live and find out if you like teaching.
Then again, if you teach abroad (say in a Korean Hakwon) you will likely find that teaching back home is far, far more demanding and frustrating! |
