Teddy Molina's troubles began when he attended Flour Bluff Intermediate School in Corpus Christi; he was part Korean and part Hispanic, and that, of course, was reason enough to target him.
Molina joined the football team; he was taunted by players and coaches looked the other way. Bullies repeatedly told Teddy they would kill him. His sister even had to rescue Teddy when a group of students cornered him at a taco stand and threatened to jump him.
Because, you know, he's Korean and Hispanic.
And Teddy kept silent about the bullying, hoping to spare his family the stories of his torment because of his ethnicity. Still, his mother heard what was happening and filed complaints with the school.
And nothing was done. In fact, Lynn Kaylor, spokesperson for the one teach at Flour Bluff School District, when asked, after Teddy Molina's suicide, if the district had a problem with bullying, answered, No, maam, we dont.
And yet, Rita McKenzie removed her two children from the districts junior high school in February due to bullying, saying, "They know about this problem. They ignore it and do nothing to try to fix it. I don't feel like my kids are safe here. I just don't.

This doesn't sound like a case of bullying. |

Are you kidding me? That's intimidation. That's bullying. |

No. Threats against someone's life which are attempted to be made real goes far beyond the scope of bullying. |

Ok, fine. I just thought you meant that it was too mild to be considered bullying. |

As a mixed-race person myself I have some of my own insight to share on this.
Parents of mixed race kids, from what I have seen thus far, are not up to speed when it comes to these issues. There is a somewhat default view that their children are the same as everyone and this same attitude leads to neglect of their children when they need help. I myself have spoken to both my parents about this issue several times but they chose to not even acknowledge the problem. Since then I have talked to several other mixed-race or Eurasian kids and the general consensus is the same.
Yes there can be bullying in NA but it's much worse in mono-ethnic cultures like Japan or Korea where you can really stick out. This is not to say that being mixed race does not have it's benefits. Many people's careers in the entertainment industry have been successful solely because of their exotic mixed-race looks and I don't have to point out any examples to make my point here.
At the end of the day it is up to the parents to be knowledgeable about these issues themselves and take responsibility for the welfare of their own children. Kids are being bullied at school? Talk/sue/change the school. Find the children other mixed race kids to talk to or get them books about it. |

Maybe because in their minds, they've put the issue of race aside, so from their perspective, "What could possibly be the problem?"
But that doesn't mean everyone else is automatically going to think that way too. Even in a supposed multi-cultural society. |

I suppose at some point in the future so many people will be of mixed race that it will be the "pure bloods" who will be the curiosities.
I think this is already the case in e.g. parts of London.
In UK at least, there came a tipping point where suddenly it was sexy to be foreign and exotic, and domestic culture was viewed as dull and boring.
I wonder if Korea will ever reach that point? |

he was bullied because he was ethnically different and this lead him to depression and eventually suicide. |

So being bullied automatically means suicide??? Are you sure it was his race that was the cause of the bullying? |

I don't think it's a stretch to say they made fun of his race but I do agree the race aspect in these situations tend to be overblown. Kids make bully eachother all the time for all sorts of stupid ass reasons. |
