I've just been offered a job working in these two towns in Gyeonggi (MWF/TTh) but would be commuting from the sinchon/edae area.
i'd possibly be looking to move to either one to save travelling every day, are they nice areas?
as far as a commute from central seoul, are we talking about 90 mins each way? |

I work in Paju and live in Ilsan, after having lived in Sinchon for a while. From where I live, which is right next the Daewha subway (last stop on line 3), it takes a little over an hour to get into Seoul proper by subway. The bus is faster, about 40 minutes, but less regular (and more nausea-inducing, though maybe that's just me).
It is a bit of a change from living in Sinchon, but I'm finding Ilsan a fine place to live. A tad cheaper, much less crowded, other than that, it's really not much different than Seoul. Less night life of course, but you can always go into Seoul for the weekend. A cab back late at night is around 25,000, which isn't really that bad. Any other questions, feel free to ask. |

If you time it right and take the Gyeongui line from Sinchon Station (train station, NOT subway - right by Ewha's gate), you can make it to Paju station in 47 minutes. if you take the express train, you can make it quicker. Depends what station you need to get to. Same with Ilsan - you can make it to line 3 in 19 minutes. If you have to transfer, it depends on what stop you're going to.
Also, where in Sinchon do you live? If you live close to Digital Media City, you can catch the Gyeongui line there, and they have trains every 15 minutes, whereas Sinchon Station is every hour.
Long story short, with careful planning and time management, it's not too difficult to make it work. If you move up there, Paju is the sticks, Ilsan is a suburb. I'd live in Ilsan. Can't remember the area, but there is a place with plenty of buses to and from Seoul, near a subway stop. That'd be the best place, transportation wise - I want to say it's a couple up from Daegok, but can't be sure. |

Ah, lol. Thanks for that. I'd actually forgotten about that little snippet of my life when I used to live in Goyang. I remember that train well. Thought it would be obsolete by now. It's one timetable you should definitely have. The trains aren't frequent but you can get to Sinchon nice and fast as you say. I used to love that train and there was always a nod of acknowledgement between foreigners who used it as it was a little known gem. It was like a magic trick being that far out and getting exactly where you wanted to be in that time. From the area of Goyang I lived - really close to a station on that line, I think it took 27 minutes to get to Shinchon - a comfortable hassle free 27 minutes. |
