|

I want to buy (have built) a new computer next week. Late last year FosterMan had a thread where a lot of useful advice was given, I was wondering, has much changed since then?
I want to spend about 800k on the base unit. I think I want to play games. I haven't actually played any PC games since the first Deus Ex came out, so it's been a while.. but I want to get back into them again.
I also want to use the computer for video editing, but I figure if it's good enough for games it'll be good enough for that, right? So what base specs should I be aiming for at what price? I don't want to get ripped off too much haha. I definitely want an SSD of 128gb (or bigger?) for the OS and core applications.
Also, my budget is a bit flexible.. if spending 100k more will result in a significant performance increase that's cool.
Also, I will use this computer in my classroom in my house. So I want to have a fairly large screen so that 4-6 kids can comfortable look at whatever educational thing I might be showing. I was thinking of buying one of those off-brand 27" or 32" full HD LED monitors/TVs that Emart/Homeplus etc. are selling at the moment.. good idea? I think that will run me about 500k more.
Thoughts? Thanks y'all. |

I'm guessing you'll want something Core I-5 from Intel for a CPU.
As for the monitor, I'd go with something higher than 1080p any day of the week. 1080p is yesterday's tech, and just doesn't look good when it's blown up to a size like 27" (1080p video material does, but up-close, computer graphics at that resolution, blown to that size, look edgy and crappy).
Get a 27" Shiman monitor at a much higher resolution, 2560x1440, like this:
http://www.11st.co.kr/product/SellerProductDetail.tmall?method=getSellerProductDetail&prdNo=365692284
There are other models by the same maker above that one. Different options bring a different increase in price. Great value, tho. |

Cool. That's much cheaper than I thought I'd be paying for a monitor. Are they likely to have it in Yongsan? I want to get everything in one shot instead of ordering some stuff online and getting some in person etc.
I will be heading to Songin Plaza (Gigabyte building). Does anyone have a favorite supplier there? All I want is for them to put it together and not rip me off... |

There is one supplier that actually has a Shiman monitor on display (as of the last several months, anyway). It was one of the largest stores in the Sun-in building, and located somewhere near the back/middle of the building. If I am giving you the right directions, from the front entrances of the Sun-in buildling (up the front ramp) take the left side entrance. Walk straight all the way to the end and turn right at the large dealer (about the same area as some chairs welded together) -- if you turned the wrong way and continued/jogged left, you'd be into the old, old remanufactured junk computers/monitors/printers area. After that right turn, you should pass a really large dealer, then several small ones for about maybe 50 feet? Then you'll run into two large dealers facing each other. The one on the right has the Shiman. It used to be on one of the bottom shelves and is hard to miss.
Keep in mind that there are several versions of pretty much the same monitor, with varying inputs and 2 different levels of brightness output. The model I listed is the bargain-basement one, if memory serves, but I thought all of them were pretty decent.
If you were actually able to follow those directions, I will tell you that I had my wife's computer built by OneMind, the supplier directly across from the store with the Shiman monitor. I will now do one better for you... just took a photo of the label inside of her computer box. This gives the name and phone number of the place. Find this place, and they'll do a decent job for you. You can view a Shiman monitor at the big store directly across from it (if it's still on display). Either store could get you one.

beaq rin mind, the higher the rez, the more pixels you need to push and the more expensive a graphics card you're going to need.
I would personally just get a 23 inch 1920 x 1080 as your budget isn't that high. |

I agree with kimchi and get a 23-24" 1080 monitor. I have one of the cheap 27" IPS monitors and while it is beautiful in comparison to my 24" Benq xl2420t next to it, you will need a decent gfx card to get decent fps in games. |

I guess I was reading that teaching kids in his home was more important than gaming. |

He started out with games and ended with classroom. I guess I was reading it the other way. Anyways, the 27" would be better for the kids and for video editing but it will put a damper on the games with a low end card. |

Yeah I didn't give it a proper read. If you want a high rez 17 incher i would go for something with a 7850 ati card in it, but that's going to take you over 800 if you're buying a made one (I'm building one with that spec and a 23 inch ips and its costing me 950,000 all in including the monitor.) |

actually icoda have a page where you can choose your own parts...
here: http://www.icoda.co.kr/i_product/online_list.html
they have the 7850 option available. I would play around with some configs. perhaps get the cheap gigabyte h61 motherboard, an intel g630 processor (they are the budget range but still very powerful) 4gb ddr3 ram (you can always upgrade later if you need more, or maybe go for 6gb) and get the gigabyte 500w psu and the cheapest case you can find (have to choose a midi and make sure the length for the video card is 300mm if you can -it normally shows that measurement on the photos on the product page) and then chuck in a 20,000 won samsung dvd rom and the cheapest hard drive you can find (if you already have a hard drive, use your own as they are over priced at the moment - either that or get a small SSD) |

Just to let you know op, that the new ivybridge cpus are out now, wait a few days and they will be in stock in some of the stores I think. (20% speed increase over sandybridge CPUs) however the low end versions wont be out until summer, so it may not be relevant to you. |

I ended up getting the 27" monitor. Only 250k for that.. and it's awesome.
I got an i5, 8gb, 7850, 64gb SSD..
I spentt over my 800. But it's awesome fast. Crazy fast compared to my last computer. I remember back when I was running my 486 sx25 with 4mb of RAM, and reading about the new stuff coming out.. this is how I imagined a 486 DX2-66Mhz with 16MB of RAM would run.. but now we have HD and pretty games and stuff.. I never bought a computer before that was blazing fast from the get-go.
I just realised it was the computer rather than the internet that was holding up some of my downloads before.. I just watched Game of Thrones HD hit 11.7MB/s downloading before it finished.. pretty sweet. |
