|

As the title says, for those who have had renewed contracts, preferably with the same school, how much time off were you given before you had to return to start your next contract? Is there a standard? Do you negotiate it?
My boss has said they will give me two months off, and I don't know if that's the norm or what and obviously no one can force you to come back, but I was just wondering from people's experience, how much time have your bosses given you to go back home before returning? |

Two months off seems like a lot unless it is a university job. I see those offers mentioned often in China, but quite possibly Korea does this too.
If you are at a hagwon or public school, why do you need more time off? That's 25% of the year. |

I found it easier to switch employers. At the end of the contract line up another job starting two months later, and move your stuff to a friends place.
[Also in that situation I had employer A fly me home, and employer B fly me back into Korea.]
Unless you work for a employer with many foreign teachers and another is leaving two months after you. Then you can replace that teacher. But to expect an employer to have a two month hole in their schedule isn't reasonable to me. |

But they are saying their current employer is giving them 2 months already. They appear to want more, which is kind of strange unless it is a university job.

The norm I think is anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks. It would make sense if they were to give you 5 days vacation time in summer or winter that you could get 2 weeks with 5 being vacation time and a week between contracts. I think if your boss is giving you 2 months, you should just nod and take it. Get the flights arranged and see if they will pay for it. After that, the school won't take back that promise or else it will financially bite them |

Oh, it seems I might have been misunderstood. Two months is more than enough time, it's actually perfect for what I have planned. I was just wondering if this was a generous amount of time off (I work at a hagwon), even if it isn't paid, since I figured one week to a month would be typical.
My contract isn't over until exactly seven more months though, this was something brought up two months ago because they want another co-worker and me to stick around beyond the standard one year. |
