I'm about to adopt a dog pretty soon and so I started doing some research on the situation of it in Korea. I'm pretty much 100% not going to buy from a pet shop, I've read and been told by a lot of friends that almost all of them sell dogs from puppy mills where conditions are horrible. The dogs don't have real medical papers and they sell them while hiding all the medical problems that these dogs have. Which are usually a lot when bred in bad conditions like that. A friend of mine bought a dog from one of the shops in Chungmuro and not only did she find out that it was mixed with another breed and not a purebred like they said it was, but after taking it to the vet she discovered that it had many medical problems that weren't mentioned. It ended up passing away two years later.
Of course this is an extreme case, but it does seems common and risky enough to avoid.

So I've been looking into dog adoption websites but my Korean is really limited so they are hard to fully understand. Does anyone know a bit about the website: http://puppynara.com/ ?
It looks like it's just postings from pet shops and they don't give much information, so I'm a bit unsure about it.

I found another website that seems really good but again, I'm not sure.
I'm specifically looking to get a French Bulldog, which are not so common in Korea and this site has one up for adoption.
http://www.doglg.co.kr/product/fc4.html
Can anyone who is fluent in Korea read through that page a bit and help me get an idea on how legitimate it is?

Anyone have other experiences with dog adoption in Korea?

Thanks for reading! (sorry for the long post)

Sure is quiet on this thread...

Here's another, has anyone here bought or adopted a dog in Korea? Is it difficult raising it with your work schedule (if you live alone and work full time). What has been your experience as a dog owner in Korea, ups and downs

My wife and I bought a Sheepdog from a pet store in korea. I'm happy we did because shes just an AWESOME dog. But yes I agree, Either adopt a dog OR buy one from a reputable breeder in korea. Our pet shop puppy came with health problems. Was infected with the corona virus, She was undernourished and had weak bones she also had somekind of skin infection. a Week after bringing her home she broke her leg just standing on it. HAd to have a 1000$ surgery ( thank god this happened in korea because the same surgery back home would be over 2500$) to put a plate and screws in. She's all healed up now and really healthy although shes still limping and building muscle mass from not using her leg for over 6 weeks.

Anyways, No need to know korean... Why not look into animal rescue korea?? ITs all in english and they list all their dogs there... Maybe think about volunteering there and possibly fostering / adopting from there...

good luck.

In February of 2008 I got a dog from animalrescuekorea.org

He's awesome. He's healthy. He's traveled to Canada and back. Can't complain about him at all, the organization or the foster mother who was taking care of him.

The people there aren't going to pawn some dog off on you to make a buck. They do care and want the dogs to go to the right place. They will tell you everything you need to do about the dog you are interested in getting.

The vet I had in Korea before I left for a year was honest about puppy mills and breeders in Korea. He had posted an article with all of the dangers about buying from these places. Just don't do it.

If you are getting a dog I hope you are permanently staying in Korea. If not, I hope you have looked into what it will take for you take your dog back home with you. Different countries have different rules.

Good luck!!!

We adopted our little mini-pin mix monster nearly a year ago. I usually like larger dogs, but he was abandoned at the vet's, and so frigging friendly that I couldn't leave him there. I couldn't have cared less if he were an ugly dog (he's actually really handsome) because he just had this amazing personality. I say go for it. Please please please do your research on how to get it home, if and when you decide to leave for home. Also, look into quarantines. We've got a couple million saved for our dude, in case we have problems finding an airline, and use a pet shipper (my friend just used one about 2 weeks ago and it cost him 950,000 won.) The USA and Canada have no quarantine period, as long as you have the medical papers stating that the dog has had its rabies vaccine within the year.

This monster is a great friend, and we couldn't imagine our lives without him.
