Some co-workers were talking about the worst place in Korea.
They all claimed it was Ansan station. The reason they say is the
foreign workers there. I have my doubts. Is it really that dangerous
or is it xenophobic paranoia.

| The only people I ever saw fighting there were Koreans. And it was only only once. It's not dangerous at all. A few years back one factory worker stabbed another guy in the train station's toilets. Suwon, Icheon, Ansan and Hwaseong all have that reputation amongst Koreans due to the foreign factory workers and transient nature of the cities. |

I've been there several times. People are friendly and polite - just very poor.
Like anywhere else you just need to take care of yourself - but no need to worry about it. |

| Some of you are making it sound as safe as a Disneyworld ride. That's not true. I will say this- I can see where it looks dangerous when large groups of men from third-world countries gather outside the station and get drunk. If you've been there recently you know that this happens far too often. I've also seen some of the drunker foreign dudes hit on younger Korean women. So, it is a place to avoid, at times. But there hasn't been any violence like outside some larger stations in Seoul during protests or when some ajoshis fight it out after a night of drinking soju. Just be careful. |

Change "men from third world countries" to "white westerners" and you've just described Hongdae or several other places in Seoul.

Or change it to Korean men and you have most of the rest of the country, just adjossis hit on women by putting their hands up their skirts rather than whistling at them. |

Been there several times. Yep plenty of SE Asian factory workers.
Dangerous?? I've never really noticed.
But the restaurant owners there can be downright rude. If you order something they want you to pay for it up front, and they look at you like you're an alien from outer space. |

Less safe than the street in Suwon that poor woman was dragged off from to be raped, beaten and hacked to pieces? Only to be ignored by neighbours and police? Fact is, anywhere in the world isn't safe for a lone woman to walk around at night (as much as it hurts me). But any less safe than that street in Suwon? Actually, probably more safe considering army guys aren't going to let a woman get dragged by her hair off the street to be tortured. Less safe for 20 year old English teachers to act like arses? Maybe. But I haven't seen it. The thing with working people of all colours, they don't want any trouble. |

As the weather gets warmer, go there on the weekends. Lotsa old Koreans dancing in the park. Before that, there's usually volleyball or that hackey sack kinda game. At around 11 or 12 the streets are usually dead except for the occasional restaurant hosting its drunkies. I mean, sure, it's not 100% safe (where is?) but it's not as bad as it's made out to be. In Ansan area, Shiheung is the more dangerous area.
I don't doubt you saying that it looks dangerous and it could be a little intimidating for people who are not used to that. But the amount of times I went there, never saw a thing. Though, like you said it's best to be careful. |

I don't understand any of the flames in my direction on this thread. The question raised was why Koreans would consider Ansan Station to be a dangerous place. I posted that there are often groups of drunken foreign men outside the station hitting on women. If you've actually been there, and not just read about it on someone's three year-old blog post, you would understand the situation and why Koreans would consider it an unpleasant place to be, at times. Even in some of your countries the home folks would consider a subway station with large groups of drunken foreigners to be a place to avoid.
And perhaps its a gender thing. Guys want to act tough and women more cautious. |

I'm not sure if saying, "I don't want to go there, there are drunk people who don't look like me" is ever really an acceptable statement. |
