Last week I quit my job and informed the employer I would give them my 30 days working notice. I have been told I need a letter of release and that it would also be beneficial to have a letter of recommendation from my boss. How can I go about bargaining to get these from him asap. Also, as for switching my visa, is it a simple trip to the immigration office once I find a new position, or should I be heading there now to change my status in some way? Any advice/information much appreciated, thanks!! |

You need to report your change of status (loss of employment) within 14 days of your last day of work.
You then have the options of:
a) leaving Korea within 30 days of the end of employment
b) finding a new job and transferring within the same 30 days
c) switch to a D10 (looking for work) visa. This will cost you 50k for the transfer and 10k for a new ARC.

Thanks ttompatz, sounds pretty simple. Any idea how long the D-100 gives me to find a new job?
I've been told I need a 'letter of release' from my boss. I asked him for this yesterday and he said I could not have it until after I completed my 30days notice... does this sound right? |

D10, not D-100 and 6 months.
There is NO (legal) obligation for an employer to give a LOR at any time or for any reason.
IF you get one, great.
If they screw you on your final pay (happens often when people quit early), don't make a fuss. Take the LOR, file for your D10 then file a complaint at the labor board for the illegal deductions from your pay.

I worry that if I work my 30 days notice, then ask for my LOR he will still not give me it as he has already asked me that I work longer than my 30 days (he wants me to train up a new teacher).
Any thoughts on how I could make this go smoothly?
(I am willing to work more than the 30 days if my next job does not start for a few weeks) |

This is the route I took, and I just didn't prepare lessons as much or teach extensively in my classes. After the time was up, I moved on to the new school.
It's almost May, what is the the prognosis so far? Did you go to labor board? What happened? |

If you agreed with him to work another 30 days and in exchange get the LOR then tell you want it now. That's normal. You need it BEFORE you finish so that you can get the paperwork underway. The LOR will say on it when you're finishing date is. |

Sounds reasonable to ask you stay a little while longer. He'll appreciate it if you do. |
