OK, I've had this idea for a while now, and I'm wondering what people might think about it.

I propose a Korean travel thread, where posters can give tips, advice, and general anecdotes on travel inside the Republic of Korea. Since there will most likely be a substantial exchange of questions and answers, I thought the Q&A forum would be the most appropriate spot for this thread.

Now, I understand much information is available on traveling in the country via guidebooks (The LP, Rough Guides, etc.), the KNTO website and other sources. But as most travelers know, such information quickly becomes outdated or unreliable.

Ideally, in this thread, people who are keen on traveling around the country could varify/refute printed travel information. Travelers could share tidbits of information NOT found in any literature, for example an off-off-the-beaten track nugget they are comfortable sharing. Travelers could opine on places they have stayed and eaten around the country. These are only a few beginning ideas.

I completely understand that those new to the country and those who work demanding schedules stick close to home on the weekends. For some, free time comes in precious little quantities. However, perhaps if those who HAVE the luxury of travel time around the country share some of their experiences, it might inspire some people to make a little bit more of an effort to get out there and see a bit of the country, other than Seoul, Pusan and their environs.

This is only a proposal. What do people think? I won't immediately respond to subsequent replies, so that people have time to see and read this.

I highly am in favor of this idea.

I think it is more useful to a korean ESL board than a technology forum.
There is nothing wrong with the tech forum just that a Korean travel forum would be great.

Pretty pretty please make a travel forum.

I wasn't thinking so much of an entire forum dedicated to travel information, rather, maybe a permanent "sticky" thread that could exist in the Q&A section.

Input from any of the mods would be appreciated.

I think a sticky wouldn't do much good--too much information in one thread! I don't think people would search through 10 pages of a sticky for a tidbit on the place they want to go.

I agree that a travel forum would be great! Good thinking, guys!

I think it's a great idea, and one that we should get rolling. All the places I've lived could be summed up in "It's a great place to live, but I'd hate to visit there" Good convenient locations, but nothing spectacular to see in the area. If anyone's going near Cheong ju though, I can definitely give them some tips

Places I will say that were great though- Songnisan National Park, Munei Folk Village ( fantastic scenery but a day trip only), Mureung Valley on the east coast. .

It is a great idea.

When The Lemon and I were doing work on the FAQ forum, it became evident that there was a need for the technology forum because there were so many tech related threads around. I also notice a huge amount of travel threads floating around - all of which were saved from the big chop.

Anyway, the idea of a travel forum has been thrown around a bit of late and we've talked to Dave Sperling about one day in the not too distant future, turning the Q&A Forum into the Travel Forum as most of the travel threads are housed here. People would be able to post their questions on any of the relevant forums - don't really need to keep all the q's together. However, dave has said that he wants to keep the Q&A Forum for a bit longer.

Perhaps to give this baby some legs, we can collect links in one place and stickify it, much like how the FAQs originally started. Once we get the good travel threads cataolgued and grouped, we can talk to Dave about getting a Travel Forum up and running... would be great to link it to the International boards too, but not sure how that would work with the dual registration thing (having to log onto both boards).

EDIT: BTW - I am talking about a combined Travel Forum to house all those threads about "Where to eat out in Hong Kong" together with the Korean related travel threads.

I'm just beginning to find my feet here and branch out to explore off the beaten track. I hate travel guide recommendations and prefer to just look at a map and work it out myself, so I woul really welcome a place as suggested that could be an exploration in progress sort of travel experience.

I'm thinking of hiking Chiaksan this weekend and it would be great to be able to flick to a set of experiences that others have had of getting there, being there and getting back.

I'm looking at doing Chiaksan and another one in Jeollanam-do in about October(once it begins to cool down).

I heard that the view of the temple on Chiaksan mountain is awesome.
